Spotify playing when turning screen off

My Question or Issue

My phone continues playing the last played playlist after I have stopped the music (either manually pausing or after disconnecting from my car Bluetooth) when I lock or even just turn the screen off (I.e. already locked and I’m just checking the time) the only way to prevent this is to force close Spotify or pause the music from my Apple Watch but then it starts again when I next look at my phone. I’ve tried restarting all devices I have linked to this Apple/Spotify account and reinstalling Spotify.
