Sync local files to ipod without installing iTunes

I do not want iTunes on my computer (partly why I switched to spotify).  I want to sync local files to my ipod nano but spotify tells me I need to check an option in itunes before it can continue.  

So is itunes required software to sync ipods with spotify local files?

What generation of iPod nano is it?

Its a 6th generation running software version 1.2

Unfortunately, it won't work with Spotify due to this bug (which they have said won't be fixed):
