Trouble syncing on iphone

Not only does it keep pausing, but I tried to switch to extreme quality in the middle of it syncing and I said yes to start the process over and now I think it's doubling up on the space taken for the synced songs.  Like I had to delete a ton of stuff before it started syncing again and I think it's creating double the space on my phone whenever a song syncs (if it ever stops being paused).  How do I keep the suncing going and get that extra space back?
