Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

Tidal Connect works tho. Not in background, granted, but in foreground the phone system volume syncs with the speakers. My phones volume bar increases when I tap on the speaker’s vol+ button and the speaker increases when I use my phone hardware button. Either way there is inconsistency. You expect that volume buttons control volume of what your phone is playing or controlling but clearly either Apple or Spotify have their own ideas (beef) for which the users must suffer. Regression.

FWIW, if anyone here is still on Twitter, you could ask @spotifycares directly about this issue. Might get some more direct answers.

Really need the volume control.  Please bring back

Fix this damnit. Spotify Connect is useless now.

Please!!!! Bring back support for iPhone side volume buttons when casting (eg. Google, B&O or Apple TV). Spotify is so difficult to use needing to open the app, tap in to the slider when you want to quickly adjust volume level.

Honestly thought this was a bug first. Is there any explanation as to why this change has been made? Has to be one of the dumbest design decisions I’ve ever seen so I’d really like to see the reasoning behind it.

Well spotify blamed apple, users dont believe them because other stuff does work, some others say that only apple stuff works, the situation is chaos and I wouldnt even put it past apple to have dont a policy-only change where the OS isnt blocking the function but apple says that certain things need to be changed if they wanna update

Tech companies do this sort of thing because they can. Sonos has just updated its app, causing huge connectivity, functionality and operational issues for customers. But it doesn’t care because most people are trapped with its products, having invested heavily in them.

The majority of Spotify users are on the free tier and / or listen through headphones, which isn’t affected by the volume button issue. Spotify couldn’t give a damn about the rest of us.

I’m just getting closer and closer to stick to my vinyls and cds. A natural step after cancelling most of my streaming accounts.
There was a time when listening to music was a very enjoyable and pure experience. Today, users are just datapoints they study to sell more. They don’t care about the music the musicians or the user experience.

I used to be able to use my volume buttons to turn up my music on my computer, they would be connected via connections, but now I can't. My app is updated, my phone is updated, nothing changed other than the fact I cannot do this anymore. I have to use the slider on my phone rather than being able to use the voulme buttons.

Can spotify give an update about a solution for this? Thinking about cancelling my subscription. I need this feature back asap

This volume bar does not work either. Please someone take this seriously

I 100% believe it is an Spotify issue. However, I have sent Apple feedback asking them to support Spotify in a fix. lets work both sides!

Before it was possible when playing a song via spotify on an alexa device, to change the volume on alexa via iphone/ipad hardware volume buttons. This is not possible any more.

My Question or Issue

It is solved !!!
with the new Spotify update for iOS (8.9.44) I can control my connected speaker.

good news šŸ™‚

I do not understand why nothing has been communicated. Even a little "we are working on it, thanks for your patience and understanding" would have been appreciated...

Finally issue has been fixed!!!

Now we can use spotify casting on airpods and control volume on watch.

IOS 17.5.1

Watch OS 10.5

Spotify 8.9.44

Everything working fine.

Hope devs test app (current issue) before promote any changes again and deliver in app store.

The update was not in my automatic updates list in the iOS. Searching for it in the store did have the updated version. And IT WORKS.

Agreed. Instead of just blaming apple.

Oh gee it works that’s nice. Communication remains an issue but thx for the fix
