Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

Volume buttons on device don't work when casting

As of Spotify 8.9.xx and newer I can't control the volume on my iPhone when casting to a Chromecast device. I need to go into the slider inside the Spotify app to change the volume.

This is not an iOS or apple issue:

My non working version of Spotify is 8.9.16.556 and just today updated to 8.9.18.xx which has the same bug.

On another iPhone a WORKING version of Spotify is 8.9.14.526

The latter works perfectly fine. It is not a iOS problem but a Spotify bug!

Both iPhones run iOS 17.3.1

If this is not being actively solved by Spotify I'm sorry to say I will cancel my subscription and change to Tidal. This is a CORE functionality.

Mine also resolved this morning. Very happy to have volume buttons back!

Hi All

One thing to clear up. This is not an issue due to Apple changing something that stops the volume buttons working.

I recorded a video of spotify on an iphone 12 (my wife’s), latest ios 17.3.1, and latest spotify version, with volume control of a connected device being controlled via the physical buttons on the phone.

Was about to post it, to avoid any ambiguity, and then, suddenly my volume control starting working again (and currently still is working). I’ve not rebooted anything, not tampered with settings. (and no, the “threat” of the video recording of another working device didn’t magically make my phone jealous and make it work!)

(Hmm, actually, would be an interesting test - what happens if you record a video on the non-working iphone and save it - does volume control somehow get a kick and work? seems impossible, but maybe someone can try and report back)

Nothing has changed that I can see (same versions as above, but on my iphone 13), and all is well.

So for those of you who still have this issue, one thing to clear up. It CAN work on latest ios/spotify versions on ios device. I would say you can ignore the various rumours that Apple did something which means it won’t work.

Now, as for the cause of the issue for those still suffering, that’s unknown, It could be a spotify issue, could be an Apple issue (changing behaviour of a particular setting etc). Still hoping someone smart cracks the mystery.

Finally, one word on etiquette. I know it’s infuriating when it doesn’t work. But let’s not blast the spotify support team here. Let’s show them our good manners and respect, and use data and facts to flush out any issues there may be. They don’t deserve any grief or abuse, no matter what.

Until next time, folks!

Huh? Now it works again!

I can confirm that it's working again; there have been no changes here, so it appears to be a network synchronization error or something similar. Unfortunately, we're unlikely to ever learn the real reasons. However, Spotify's communication has been exceptionally poor. There's no excuse for that level of inadequacy.

Could be something server side that has been switched. Or apple or Spotify made an on-the fly update we don't know about. Google did this all the time in the early android days where functions suddenly worked, then didn't, or changed.

Hoorah!  Yes defo working again out of the blue.  Who knows who did what but at least it works again.  I share the view of others though that this could been a lot less painful and I for one could have been more supportive of Spotify if they’d had the good grace to tell us what was going on..

Maybe a lesson for next time ( in the unlikely event that a Spotify decision maker ever reads this thread - hope springs eternal… 😀)

That’s a generous view re etiquette Marcot. Ordinarily I would agree with you and understand where you’re coming from but working in customer service myself it occurs to me that you have to engage with your customers and keep them informed.  If you seem to ignore folks or feed them canned responses you can expect a degree of rough treatment.. Anyway we can agree to disagree and there are more important things in the world…

I’m bumping this. Still having problems

I’ll be damned. Mine started working today as well. Awesome!!

One would think this forum actually works!

 Thanks Spotify!!

Whoah, I’ll have to check when I get home

Mines still broken, I’m on dev build IOS with latest Spotify app, been like this since beginning of year

Agreed. Praise is to be earned. Spotify did not do anything to earn a praise with their single copy-paste disclaimer in regards to this matter.

Working on mine now again. And with neither an iOS or Spotify app update, one can only summise this was a server-side issue that has been resolved.

It would be nice if we got an update on the resolution.

Its working but for how long!!!!!!!!

I've lost the ability to change the volume when casting since several weeks ago. I am on iOS 17.4 GM and the latest Spotify. I've also ran into the issue of not being able to change the volume on the Apple Watch Spotify app when listening on my Airpod Pros either. So does bluetooth devices fall under no more hardware volume control per the CS rep on this thread? This is such an annoying issue that makes me want to cancel my Premium subscription.

Mine is now working intermittently, so this problem is not solved.  Most recent iOS and Spotify.  Before two days ago, the volume buttons on the phone weren't working at all to control the volume on my speaker controlled by Spotify Connect.  Then two days ago it started working, but only sometimes.  Very frustrating that there's no update from Spotify on what's happening here.  Please respect your customers and update us on this issue.

Not working again.

Very annoying.

I updated to the final release of iOS 17.4 yesterday, and the volume control for Sonos is now working again. This would seem to conflict with the customer service's comment about it being removed in iOS. It seems like its really hit or miss for who it's working for and isn't. Anyone else on 17.4 and is it working for you?

I updated to iOS 17.4 this morning. For me it is not working (I'm on version 8.9.19.571 of the app).

I can see the iOS volume slider when I try to change the volume with the buttons, but it is not changing the volume on the Spotify Connect speaker.

I now have this issue always when using Spotify Connect. Of course, it works fine when using AirPlay.

My assumption is that Apple made changes to the API that apps use to control the volume.

When using Spotify Connect, the iPhone is not actually the device that downloads and plays the music, the connected speaker is. I'm assuming that Spotify used a workaround to still control the volume via the iPhone API in that case, and that this workaround now only works intermittently.

I also assume (sincerely hope...) that Spotify are working on a different way to control the volume of the Connect speaker, so that it is not necessary to tap three times to get to the slider in the app. I can understand that Spotify is dependent on Apple for use of the API, but at least they can make changes in the UI of their own app and hopefully in the live update thingy to make changing volume easier.
