I've been syncing my 80gb iPod Classic through Spotify for months already, but i decided to redo all of my playlists (local music only) and figured that factory resetting my iPod would be best in order to make sure there wouldn't be any problems with fragmented files or anything. After the reset, I open Spotify with no problems, but when i plug in my iPod, it shows it under the Devices list for a second and then Spotify crashes. I tried opening it back up with my iPod still plugged in, and it crashes upon opening. After a few tests of my own, I've determined that if I leave my iPod unplugged from my laptop, Spotify has no problems at all, but the second it's plugged in, all hell breaks loose. Any idea what the problem could be?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Running Spotify as administrator does not make any difference on my computer.
i am sorry, are we able to listen to spotify through ipod classic?
To the best of my knowledge, i thought it could only work on ipod touch or iphone that can run the app?

You are correct, but you can use Spotify to sync your local files to an iPod classic, nano or shuffle similar to how iTunes does it.

Exact same problem here! But I think I've find a solution...kinda....
I have 5th generation ipod, Spotify Sync was working pretty fine until yesterday...since yesterday I cannot open spotify with my Ipod Plugged in, and if I open Sptify, it crashes and closes itself as soon as I plug in my Ipod. Tryed everything on this post, nothing worked 😕
My workaround: As stupid as it can sound...I opened Spotify, and then plugged in my Ipod. Now you have like 2 seconds in wich:
Your Ipod Icon appears under "Devices" > Starts sychronizing > Spotify Crashes.
After severals tries, I managged to click fastly in the "disconnect" or "eject" button as soons as is on sight, before the program crashes...and it worked. The device was safely disconected, and when I plugged my Ipod again, it worked and was synchronizing my music perfectly...
Maybe it was just luck or, but it worked for me. Despite of sounding completely nuts I swear Im not trolling...
Give it a try! I hope it helps 😉
That did not help me 😕 Managed to eject, still get kicked out as soon as i replug it.
Having consulted this thread about thirty times, it's fair to say that I have had these exact same problems for about two months, however where my problem differed is that mine is a 4G iPod shuffle, it also seemed more complicated on my end because even iTunes did not want to recover the iPod. Moreover the computer ports didn't want to recognise the iPod any longer (Ain't nobody got time fo' dat!)
Things weren't behaving for a long time, iTunes, of course, would keep popping up all 'IPOD NEEDS RESTORING' and Spotify would equally have a little paroxysm about the iPod needing restoring and then crash. Then iTunes would give me a neat little error message. So I kept retrying and retrying-- then finally it conceded. For safety, I restarted the computer and ran spotify in administrator mode.
As I speak, Spotify is finally syncing to my iPod, so I may as well point out where I've had my quandaries. Firstly, when I connected the iPod, it crashed Spotify and wasn't recognised by its given name (Titanic, because well, 'syncing Titanic') it was 'IPOD' in Spotify. The problem for me seemed to lay in the fact that Spotify wanted to sync 'all music' to this iPod-- which at 40gb is way beyond its capacity-- so perhaps that is why it crashed.
Smartly, I switched 'sync all music' into 'manually choose’, which has given me the three hundred songs on my iPod that I initially wanted and so made me a happy customer. I'm not sure if this anecdote is any help at all as I'm no computer specialist, but whatever I did worked for me.
(If anyone's interested, I have Windows 7)
It looks if another application (or Windows) is trying to read the iPod, Spotify crashes... could there be an I/O issue that's not being handled properly and causing it to crash?
I will say this, I got to the sync screen but it said that I needed to go to iTunes and finish setting up my device. Once I did this, it started crashing. Could the newest version of iTunes have changed something?
I thought part of setting the ipod up for spotify synching was to erase all traces of itunes on the device? So I imagine that setting it up again with itunes is only going to cause problems.
Just found this thread and I'm having the same problem. I tried all the suggested solutions through out the five pages to no avail. 😞 Any new answers that anyone has heard of?
Thanks!
Loretta
Did you initially set up your ipod classic following these steps? What actually happens now, when you connect your ipod to your desktop? What version of the desktop client are you using?

Hi Joe,
The moment Spotify realizes I have an iPod it crashes so I can't follow the steps.
Unfortunately, like everyone in this thread, I can't get that far because of the crashes. I tried all the suggestions in this five page thread including the one where you eject your iPod and then reset it afterwards. No luck.
Thanks,
Loretta
Reinstalled Spotify client twice, according to instructions. It still crashes when Spotify tries to sync to iPod. I keep trying to select sync manually because I have a huge music library and I don't want everything put on the iPod. I want to choose which music goes to iPod. But Spotify just keeps on crashing. Then I have to go to iTunes, restore iPod, then close iTunes & open Spotify and the crash repeats. Over and over again.
Hi there, I had the same problem with my 3rd generation ipod classic. I solved it doing this:
iTunes:
1. Reset the ipod
2. Uncheck "Manually manage music and videos"
3. Go to the "Music" tab and check "selected playlists, artists, albums and genres"
4. Select one song at least.
5. Sync
Turn on Spotify and:
1. Go to Devices
2. Select the iPod
3. Select "Erase and Sync iPod"
That's it!.
Apparently, spotify app needs an iPod previously synchronized with one song in iTunes at least.
I hope this help you.
Greetings from Peru.
Thanks for sharing that @renzo_zapata . Sounds almost like witchcrafft 🙂 Does this work for anyone else having this issue?
same problem. iPod crashed, when clicking on manual sinc. Any updates on this, without re-installing the program 10 times?

then it only syncs the local music and I don't get any music from the spotify library... Not really an option. Do you think, this is going to be solved at some point?

It is mentioned in the client under "Devices" which says "Sync your MP3's" and on the help page:
