syncing old iPod Nano

I'm on the spotify free trial and have an old iPod Nano, which says it is version 1.l0.2 - it was my daughters and has some of her music transferred illegally to it after it was put in my name.    I am being told my iPod needs to be restored, when I try to sync with Spotify.
