Moving from iTunes subscription but keeping account

So, me and my husband want to set up the family account. I set it up and invited him but it looks like he can't because his subscription is through iTunes. Is he able to cancel his iTunes subscription without losing his account? He doesn't want to lose his playlists!

accept my invite for the family account without losing all his playlists?
