I have had a premium account for a month, and wished to apply the student discount to my account before the end of my trial period. However, the directions provided by Spotify to set up a discounted premium account have not been helpful. Rather than prompting me to verify my eligibility, the website goes to my account info, where there is no way to upgrade to discounted premium. Does anybody know how I can apply the discount without having to create a new account?

I think you have to cancel your current subscription before you sign up for the student discount subscription.
You can do that here:
https://www.spotify.com/accounts/subscription/
(don't worry, if you cancel your subscription you still get to keep the remaining time period)
If you still have problems , I suggest you contact support so they can take a look at your account and see what is going on:

If you get an automated reply email, you need to reply back to it.

Sorry for the trouble! Spotify recently changed a few things with the subscription pages, and it's causing a glitch for some people.
