I just had to restart my computer in safe mode and uninstall Spotify. I kept getting a message that I needed to re-download Spotify because it might be infected by a virus. My computer wouldn't connect to the internet. When I went to unistall, I got a message saying it couldn't uninstall because it might be infected by a virus. That's when I restarted in safe mode and finally uninstalled. I won't be re-installing until I'm confident there are not viruses coming in through Spotify.
As long as you download spotify from spotify.com there's no chance of a virus. Occasionally virus checkers give a false positive so I'd suggest using a different one or contacting the support for your virus checker.
I downloaded it months ago from Spotify.com. My virus software is in tact. It wasn't the virus checker that was teling me it was a virus. It was a Windows pop-up message. It was clearly a virus through Spotify because once I restarted in safe mode and uninstalled it, everything was back to normal working order.
Pictured is the message I got when I tried to uninstall Spotify the first time. After that message, I restarted in safe mode and was able to uninstall.
So the .exe file was damaged from the look of that which explains why you couldn't uninstall it normally. There are many possible causes so it seems a bit silly to shout "virus". Even if a virus checker shwoed that spotify was infected, I would suspect the infection happened on your PC and wasn't in the download.
Remember that millions of people use spotify all over the world so, if there was a virus in the spotify download, I imagine it would make the mainstream news pretty fast.
So the Spofify program works fine for months on end, it stops working yesterday, I get a message that there's a virus, I have to restart in safe mode in order to uninstall, I uninstall the program, everything goes back to normal working order after uninstalling, but the problem is somewhere other than Spotify?
I don't understand how that makes any logical sense.
That pop-up actually said the file was damage..........maybe it was infected. Files can be damaged by hard drive errors, power outages and I'm sure there are other possibilities too. If you don't use an antivirus programme, I strongly recommend you download one - there are several good free ones out there.
I do use an anti-virus program.
I'm still waiting before I re-download. It doesn't seem safe at this point.
Up to you 🙂
