Why Can't I Use My Spotify Gift Cards to Upgrade to a Premium Account?

The option to upgrade to a premium account doesn't allow you to use a gift card because it's trying to force you to get a trial of the premium account?  I can't seem to purchase the premium account at $10/month with my gift cards.....there should be an option to not take the free trial if you want to pay by gift cards...also if you want to pay by gift cards, why isn't the free trial option available to you?  It makes no sense...
