premium versus basic memberships

i have a premium membership of my own, but i just got a basic and free membership for my daughter.  after i logged her in, i wasn't able to select a song to play, as it would only shuffle songs from the artist i had chosen.  is this normal? i never had a basic membership myself, so, i don't even know the difference between premium and basic memberships, or the pros and cons of each.  my main question would be, am i able to listen to music of my choice, if i had a basic membership, or does spotify become more like pandora, if you don't pay for the premium membership? i could not find any information on the spotify website to distinguish between the two.  thanks for your time and help.

Let me explain the differences:

Mobile:

• Premium: Unlimited song skips, you can deactivate shuffle, high streaming quality, you can choose what song to play from an artist/album/playlist, no ads, you can use the connect feature and download your playlists for offline mode.
• Free: Just 6 skips per hour, songs will play in shuffle mode from an artist/album/playlist, low streaming quality, ads.

Tablet/iPad

Have you logged in using the same credentials you used when subscribing to Premium.

Have you tried logging out/logging in on your Spotify account?

Have you received a payment confirmation after subscribing to Premium?
