Android App: Transmit Track Info via Bluetooth (A2DP/AVRCP 1.3)

Solved!

Android App: Transmit Track Info via Bluetooth (A2DP/AVRCP 1.3)

So i have Spotify on my AVR, PC, Android Mobile, but not in my car. Not a big problem, just connect the phone via bluetooth.

Works like a charm, the only downside, the Song/Album/Artist information is not transmited when using the spotify android app. A quick test with the default android player shows that this works perfectly. I see song/album/artist on the car display.

So please, add this functionality to the android app. (to spare you the search implement A2DP/AVRCP 1.3 🙂

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback and comments around this. We are going to move this to the Android board rather than the Ideas board. We'd like to continue gathering info on this as we see it more as a potential issue rather than an idea request. Thanks everyone!

So, it's now 2015, you have a very successful app/service with millions of paid subscribers but you can't fix the considerably simple issue (simple compaired to everything else you've managed to do to even provide your service).  However these issues still need your attention.

-Trasmit meta data over bluetooth for Android devices-

every single app I've used over bluetooth to play music in my car does this except Spotify.

-Fix playstate over bluetooth-

Maybe I want to switch to the radio for a minute to check on the local sports game or get a traffic update.  my Spotify should pause until I come back to that option on my stereo and then play again, not pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play-pause-play for the entire time I'm listening to the radio then stop playing when I switch back to bluetooth...

C'mon guys, get it together.  This was brought to your attention back in 2012 for christ sake

Hi
For me if I play offline files over Bluetooth I can see the metadata on the radio screen.
Sometimes the artist, album, track name are the same, but I think it depends on how metadata is inserted in the audio track from Spotify.
I have a volkswagen.

Hoping the 5.0 update will solve it for me as well. Fingers crossed.

If you mean the Android 5.0 Lollipop update then no - it doesn't. I'm currently running 5.0.2 (the very latest and greatest) and if I'm being polite, metadata transmission over bluetooth for Spotify is flakey.

For now, play one of the songs which seems to "kick-start" metadata transmission (such as Daft Punk - Too Long) or play music over another app (such as Google Play Music) and then immediately switch to Spotify.

Workarounds are all we have at the moment.

I found fixify and it works for my lg g3 and aftermarket pioneer radio.

Would you mind sharing with the rest of the class?

Fixify app, free version available to test and a buy version for a dollar if you want to.

Some cars radio are able to connect through Bluetooth to Android cellphones and my radio have thumbs up and down for Pandora...

Maybe it's easy to get that Bluetooth thumbs up & down signal and add current song to our radio or else!

An easy and great upgrade for app in car!!!

I'd like to add to all complaints the fact that Spotify does not transmit track number information through Bluetooth. Other players do. Also, the fast forward and rewind buttons do not work.

I've talked to my car dealer about this, apparently Seat is coming out with a software update (due for september) that should solve bluetooth problems. I can only guess that this might also affect VW,Skoda,Audi...

the previously mentioned "Fixify" works for the most part with the transmitting data to your stereo.  I actually spoke with the developer of the app and he said Spotify updated their app to work better over bluetooth, but I've yet to see this be the case..

Hello Everyone.

I have another workaround for getting song information sent over to your Audio Unit.

  1. Before turning on your Audio Unit, make sure Spotify is completely closed on your phone. In Android 5.0, i use the recent tasks and swipe it away for it to stop. You can also manually Force Stop it from Settings.
  2. Start the Spotify app (cold start for the app)
  3. Start your Audio Unit.
  4. Voila it now works.

So basically, the Song Information is not sent over if the Audio Unit connects to Spotify when it is already running in the background. A cold start to Spotify jump starts it somehow.

If your Audio Unit has auto connect and starts the Audio Player on your phone automatically like mine does, the same problem occurs. So have the Spotify app cold started before your Audio Unit turns on then you are good.

Hope this helps the devs narrow down the root cause.

My Device and Audio Unit specs:

Device:

Moto X (2014 Pure Edition)

Android 5.0 (Stock)

Spotify Premium

Audio Unit:

Honda Civic EX (2014)

Fixify doesn't resolve my problem. Starting Google Play Music, then Spotify does. So the problem herein lies with Spotify.

Is Spotify going to keep taking my money and not pulling their finger out and resolving this? Seems like they could sort this very easily if it works with no issues with other music apps!

It finally works for me on version 2.4.0.815. I get track and album information on my Nissan LEAF infotainment system!

My phone is Samsung Galaxy S2 running Android 4.1.2

I am using "Bluetooth connect and play" to automatically start spotify when the phone is connected to the car.

The Sony Walkman App using the Music Unlimited connection worked perfectly on the Blue Tooth Audio in my VW. Now with the Spotify Android APP running on my Xperia Z2 the Artist and Track name are sent but have lost the track progress time bar?

Seeing that Spotify and Sony have partnered up they need to get their act together otherwise Spotify will lose all the Music Unlimited customers.

Still no fix here but interestingly the track November Rain by Guns and Roses works almost perfectly!

It is interesting that my little podcast app does a great job of keeping the time elapsed/remaining and titles consistently updated, but my Spotify can't keep it straight most of the time.

Would not have thought that.

I am having the same issue, unforunaley I can't offer any solutions, but I am hoping that enough users with the issue will prompt Spotify to resolve this issue. I found a thread over on XDA and it looks realtivley easy to resolve (but I am not a developer so don't really have a clue)...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323103

I am trying to use Spotify in my 2015 VW Golf R with the standard 'Compostion Media' unit - all audio controls work, play, pause, next/previous track, however I am getting no metadata.

I have identified a couple of scenarois where I can get the data to show as follows:

1. Music is playing > make a phone call > end call > metadata will show for the track playing before the call was started. When skipping to the next track however, the data is not updated.

2. As other have suggested, start another app first. Play a song in Google Play Music > Pause the song > open and play a song in Spotify. Metadata now works correctly for that session.

Unforunatley only scenario 2 seems to be a workaround (not a solution). Hopefully the Spotify crew can identify and resolve the issue.

Tech stuff for Spotify developers - I am running:

Phone: OnePlus One

OS: CyanogenMod 12.1-20150418-NIGHTLY-bacon (Supports AVRCP v1.3)

Spotify App: 2.7.0.883

Bluetooth Device: 2015 VW Golf R with Composition Media (Supports AVRCP v1.3)

Based on the info above, both the phone and recieving device support the required AVRCP profile as stated in another thread somewhere (I think - correct me if I am wrong). All other apps work fine, Google Play Music, Deezer etc...

Finally, one last thing to mention, I have tried most of the 3rd party solutions including Fixify and AutoAudio. I am plannig to test metafy later tonight and will let you know how I get on.

Really hoping for an officail fix to this relativley minor issue. Many thanks in advance!

same issue for me on my 2015 golf gti and ford f150. i have also found that if i play a podcast from pocketcast, pause it and then use spotify it works just fine except for track time.  i have a moto x 2014 but it has never worked on any of my android phones, samsung g4 and nexus 5.  thinking about moving away from spofity because of it, especially when most other apps can do it just fine
