Chromecast Audio - problems skipping tracks

Chromecast Audio - problems skipping tracks

Hi everyone, I can't seem to skip tracks on spotiy when the audio device is a Chromecast Audio without the songs stopping, or hanging. Where as if I leave the song playing it always goes to the next song no worries. Both apps have been updated to latest versions.

Did you have a similar problem with other services, like Netflix or any other?

I don't have problems with anything except with Spotify.

Strange thing is that it works well many times, but there are some songs that make it hang in pause.

It really doesn't seem to be a network problem, but who knows...

Everything else was working, except Spotify would refuse to play or skip songs over Chromecast at some points. I guess at times communication from the Spotify app did not reach the Chromecast device, or the Chromecast device was unable to communicate with Spotify!

We may have different problems, but here's the information I sent to Spotify support so you can see if your issue is different to mine:

Unfortunately the new account details haven't resolved the issue.

I tried the new account on my Android phone and had the issue with my Chromecast connected to my TV, and also my Chromecast Audio connected to some speakers. I guess that rules out a hardware issue on the Chromecast side if it happens across two different devices.

I also tried my usual Spotify account on an Android tablet, and my Apple/OS X laptop and had the same issues with pausing/skipping not working correctly. So it doesn't seem to be an Android specific issue either.

I'm wondering if it could be network related, as the thing in common between all these devices is that they're connected to the same network. Unfortunately I don't have a separate router or network at home that I could use.

You can see that:
  • Streaming and play/pause works fine when I'm playing locally through the tablet's speakers
  • When I connect to the Chromecast device the currently playing song starts playing through the Chromecast (this is actually quite rare, more often than not when the connection is established the album artwork etc appears on the TV but the song is paused, not playing)
  • When I change track, the new track appears on the TV but is paused. When I press the play button in the app, the previously played song starts playing again for a split second before pausing again.
  • The play button doesn't make the current track play, it turns from a pause button into a play button without doing anything
  • Mashing the play button repeatedly eventually gets the current track (the one with the green album art to play)
  • Skipping track updates the album art on the app and TV but the audio from the previous track continues for a second or so.
  • More evidence of the play button not working and the audio not matching the album art etc shown on screen.
  • Another example of mashing the play button eventually triggering the correct song (the SOPHIE track) to play
  • Skipping from SOPHIE to MO, pressing play still plays the SOPHIE track not the MO track, until I mash the play button then the MO track eventually plays but after quite a delay.
Let me know if there are any logs I can provide from the Chromecast or Spotify apps.
I changed my network setup to use the router supplied by my ISP as the modem instead of the built in modem of my Asus router, and it seems to have fixed the issue. It's odd, as the Chromecasts, my laptop, and my phone are all still connected to the same wireless access point so all have the same fixed IPs and so on, and are still subject to the same firewall rules, it's just that the outgoing connection is going through a different device. Weird, but it's working — so hooray! Feel free to close this ticket, I will re-open it if my Chromecast starts playing up again, or if my network setup changes and I need more help restoring the Chromecast connectivity.

Good summary of the Problem. Same problems here with my Fire TV Box. Streaming from Android device to Android device / Windows PC works fine with Spotify Connect, Streaming any device to the Fire TV creates the same problems as above.

Philw: it's interesting that your problems solved by changing the router: that may be a clue for Spotify to understand what's happening.

But it doesn't exempt Spotify from the responsibility. If Netflix (which uses a lot more of bandwidth than just audio) is working well with the same router, then Spotify should achieve the same results. Or, at least, identify which router setting it does not support.

but... what!? change routers?! i only have one -_-"

Even that didn't help me! And btw: newest android update didn't fix it either

Well i messed around with my router settings. went to 10.0.0.## and logged in. saw that my dns settings were not correct. I had set the dns to one from USA. Gotta check that american netflix, you know. Cleared the DNS so maybe that was the issue. I'll have to check that when i get home from work.

I have exactly the same problem described. I'm using a homehub 5, what routers are everyone else using? Also maybe its linked to a 5ghz WiFi signal?

I have tried both 2,4 and 5 Ghz and it did not make a difference in my case.

Same problem here. Hoping that Spotify will fix this soon!

Same problem. Hope that spotify fix this cause if dont I am forced to quit my subricption.

It is a problem with the Spotify software that they're not addressing. You can use the spotify web player with google chrome on pc as a workaround - that works fine. Not a chromecast problem.

Same problem. Cant skip songs anymore. Spotify has worked perfect for several years, and now this....FØKk

Having similar problems today, having never had them before. Everything is great on my phone, but when I cast to Chromecast Audio, I can't skip tracks and it quickly disconnects, leaving the audio playing on my Chromecast and a different song playing on my phone.

Me too. Ridiculous- not had issue before but it sucks
