Double and triple tap function in podcasts is broken

Double and triple tap function in podcasts is broken

Booted today and Spotifys podcast controls no longer work with the double and triple tap on my earbuds. Previously they could skip forward or back 15 seconds, and now skip the entire track or bring it back to the beginning, which loses my places in a sometimes multi hour episode.

Hi @Revanide,

Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome.

For starters, we'd recommend completely disconnecting the Earbuds, restarting both the earbuds and your device, and then reconnecting them to check if that makes a difference. If that doesn't help, you can try reinstalling the Spotify app by following these steps. No worries, you won't lose any content, but you might need to download your offline music again.

On another note, let us know if you use this with any other app and if it's still working. And if you have the chance, check if this happens with another Spotify account. If you don't have any available, you could ask a relative or friend to log in with their account on your device and check.

Let us know how that goes!

Restarted everything, the fix was deleting the app for some reason, it was only one Bluetooth device and only Spotify, other devices could skip 15s on Spotify, and the earbuds could skip 15s on other apps

One day later and the issue has returned

Hi @Revanide,

Thanks for keeping us updated.

We understand deleting the app fixed it temporarily, so if you haven't, we'd recommend running a clean reinstall of the Spotify app. This is a more thorough process and sometimes helps. We also recommend resetting the Pixel buds with these steps.

If none of that helps, could you try logging in with a different account on Spotify and check if that makes a difference?

Keep us posted!

I also experience this issue using Version 8.8.96.364 with android 13 sony Xperia V. I get the exact same problem on the same Spotify version using a Samsung galaxy S20 ultra 5G in android 13. This only happens with Bluetooth devices when I press next or prev.  Basically the next/previous button skips the entire podcast as if it were a music track.

This is not the first time this bug has appeared:

Can you please get this fixed ?

Hi there,

@JDubbZ, what earbuds do you have? Are you also using Pixel earbuds?

@Revanide, could you share the exact model of your earbuds?

Also, have you folks noticed this behavior after a recent update to your buds' software or a Spotify update?

We'll be on the lookout for your replies.

Thanks for the reply. So my original message was maybe not so accurate. My use case is I'm actually using a garmin smart watch (Garmin Enduro 2, however the same problem is also present on the Garmin Fenix 6) for my media controls but with bluetooth headphones (Bose QC35's, Bose QC Ultras,  Soundcore A20i). There are media controls on these watches however they used work with +/- 15 seconds when combined with spotify podcasts however now they do not.  If i use the media controls on my headphones that actually works properly.  I can power off the headphones and the garmin still causes next to go to the next podcast rather than the old (expected) functionality of going forward +15s.  My understanding is thou that the -/+ 15 seconds is Spotifys reaction to prev/next IF the app is playing a podcast and that the garmin is just sending these standard prev/next signals? As I said, it used to work this way but something has changed.   I still feel like this issue is connected with the OP, otherwise I'm sorry if I hijacked this thread, if needs be I can open another thread just about this Garmin podcast skipping problem

I am using the Pixel buds Pro, i have already completely removed spotify from my device and redownloaded it.

Hey folks,

We'd like to report this to our tech team so can you please send over the below info (if you haven't already):

  • The models of the Bluetooth devices this happens with.
  • The model, OS version and exact Spotify version of the device from which you're streaming.

@JDubbZ, it looks like your issue is related so feel free to share the second part of the above info as well 🙂

Thanks!

My Question or Issue

Previously, the forward and backwards steering wheel buttons would treat podcasts and music different when using Spotify through Android Auto.

When listening to a podcast, the forward button would fastforward 15 seconds in the podcast. The backwards button would rewind 15 seconds in the podcast.

When listening to music, the forward button would skip to the next track. The backwards button would restart the song and a second tap would move to the previous track.

After an update on Android 14 to One UI 6. The steering wheel buttons behave the same for both podcasts and music. When listening to a podcast, the forward button skips to the next podcast. The backwards button restarts the podcast and a second tap moves to the previous podcast.

This is incredibly frustrating because if I want to fastforward/rewind while listening to a podcast I must:

  1. Close whatever else I have up on the Android Auto console.
  2. Open Spotify.
  3. Open to current track screen within Spotify.
  4. Click on the ellipses.
  5. Finally, I have a button to fast forward 15 seconds.

This is incredibly inconvenient and requires the driver to look away to complete 5 different tasks. The fact that the fast forward button is further nested in a submenu is kind of asinine especially when you're clearly listening to a podcast.

Is there any workaround for this or fix in process? If not then the utility of using Spotify to listen to podcasts through Android Auto is no longer there.

I already posted that information, here it is again:

I also experience this issue using Version 8.8.96.364 with android 13 sony Xperia V. I get the exact same problem on the same Spotify version using a Samsung galaxy S20 ultra 5G in android 13. This only happens with Bluetooth devices when I press next or prev.  Basically the next/previous button skips the entire podcast as if it were a music track.  I'm issuing the next/prev from both a Garmin Fenix 6 and a Garmin Enduro II smart watch -- the issue is present on both watches.

Hi there folks,

@JDubbZ, thanks so much for the info. For anyone else experiencing the situation, @Revanide and @michaelpgalluccio, send over the info @MihailY requested. Once we have those details we can report it.

We'll be on the lookout!

I'd like to add i discovered that it can be triggered by switching earbuds. I typically use one at a time, and swap them during the day to preserve their battery, and after swapping it no longer worked. it  has been on and off constantly as of late, but specifically stopped working momentarily when, with one earbud in, i pulled out and turned on the second one, they sync'd up, and then put the first bud back into the charging case. maybe its related?

Hi @Revanide,

Thanks for the reply. Does it also happen for you when using both earbuds together normally or only when using one at a time?

Let us know how it goes.

I have a similar issue with my Garmin Fenix 6 Pro watch and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. On Android 13, I was able to fast-forward a 15-sec podcast using my watch. However, after updating to Android 14, the same watch skips the entire track instead of fast-forwarding.

Interestingly, my Jabra earbuds work correctly. Even on Android 14, after pressing them twice, my podcast fast-forwards by 15 sec.

Hi @Kaspi,

Thanks for the reply. So that we can narrow down the possible root cause, can you please confirm the following:

  1. Does the Garmin watch work properly with other Android 13 or Android 14 devices?
  2. Does the Jabra work as expected with any Android 13 or Android 14 device?

Please test this if you haven't already. You can use the phones of someone you know for this purpose.

Let us know how it goes.

1) The Garmin watch is working correctly with Android 10 (I tested it two days ago). Currently, I do not have Android 13 to check its compatibility, but as I remember  prior to the Android 13 update, everything was functioning properly.

2) The Jabra headphones currently work without any issues on Android 14. I did not test them on earlier Android versions as I used my Garmin watch for control.

Hey folks,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop!

In order for this to get looked into even further, would you mind letting us know what version of Spotify you're currently running? We also recommend checking so that you have the latest version installed. You can see it by following the steps on this page.

We'll keep an eye out for you replies.

I've checked the latest version 8.9.18.512 and the problem still exists.
