How to stop my phone from controlling volume on my computer

Hello, I have the following problem: whenever i am playing music on my computer, the volume control button on my phone is directly linked with my computer spotify volume so whenever i click less volume it just changes that of my pc spotify instead of the volume of my actual phone. How can i stop that?

Thanks in advance

Hey @TheNamesJames,

Thanks for posting on the Community and welcome.

In this case, could you go to Spotify and head to Settings (on your phone) and toggle off the option "Spotify Connect in background". Afterwards, restart your devices (Mac and phone) and tell us if the issue persists.

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

This finally fixed my problem.

Hi @AndresM,

Thanks for the reply. I tried those steps, but I can’t find “Spotify Connect in background” in Spotify’s setting (nor in iOS, just in case).

I’m using iOS app version 8.7.34.1624

Hi @TheNamesJames!

Have you tried disabling the Background App Refresh in your iPhone's settings (Settings > General > Background App Refresh) to see if it would have any effect on the app's behavior?

Keep us posted on this.

I'm having this problem right now! Spotify is NOT open on my phone, but whenever I use the volume down button on my phone, the computer volume still turns down. I've literally opened spotify on my phone and then force stopped it on the phone multiple times. This will fix it for only a few minutes, and then it starts happening again! Please help...this is so annoying.

Hey @bfinnegan87,

Thanks for reaching out about this in the Community and welcome.

We recommend that you head to Spotify Settings > Spotify Connect in background, and toggle off this option. After doing this, let us know if the behavior persists.

Changing tunes, you can send us the make/model, OS version and Spotify version installed in your device in case the previous suggestion doesn't work on your end.

We'll stay tuned.

Same here, this issue is the worst shitty function of spotify, that there is no toggle setting to disable this bug makes the whole spotify universe stink

Hi there @MySpotlfyStinks,

Thank you for your reply. We're sorry to hear that you feel this way. Let's take a closer look into this together if you'd like to.

Can you start with confirming if you tried the steps that's been mentioned by the other moderators above?

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

Take care!

Live, love, laugh and listen to music 🙂

To the patient moderators suggesting “Spotify Settings > Spotify Connect in background, and toggle off this option”, could you be more precise (screenshots maybe?) about this instruction.

I’ve looked for this option on my iOS device and my macOS device (the two devices interfering with each other in my case) and am unable to find it. I have a feeling I’m not the only one

I disabled Background App Refresh for Spotify on my iOS device as suggested and, so far, haven’t experienced the random volume issue. So, fixed? Mebbe

Thanks for the support so far

I believe this is what they are talking about.  This is what I found per their earlier instructions and so far I have had not had any issues.  Edit:  I know this forum is more for Android, and I apologize as I do not have an Android device, but maybe it will be about the same.  However, many of us here have been wanting a fix for iOS as well.

  1. Open iOS App and be signed in
  2. Touch Home at bottom left
  3. Touch gear (Settings) icon top right
  4. Touch Devices
  5. Disable Devices Lock Screen

Here are some screen shots for others.  This has greatly improved my experience.  I just wish the option were labelled differently in the app, as I believe that is where a lot of the confusion comes in.  Many thanks for the Spotify folks that recommended this solution.

This is how my device is set and I still get the full volume spike.

This is not an optimal solution. I want Spotify to stay open on both devices. I just don't want changing the volume on my phone (even when Spotify is in the background) to change Spotify on PC volume.
Is it so difficult to add such option?

Hi @w2f1a9wvm40hxna4zmg,

Spotify Connect is intended to also serve a remote control function, so if you're listening on your PC, you can control the playback through your phone as long as the app is running. If it's not, or you play audio from other apps, you'll be able to control the phone's media volume as normal.

Hope this clears things up. Take care.

yes it keeps happening even when I close the app on my android, too annoying

That's not what it's doing though. It's hijacking phone volume and NOT letting you control other media volumes on the phone.

I'm playing Spotify on an Amazon echo. I open my phone and play a website with video. I can't hear the video so I hit volume up on my phone. The spotify on Amazon echo goes up, but my phone's volume does not change. This is without even launching Spotify on my phone. I have the background Spotify connect toggle turned off. This happens even without Spotify in my recent apps list (swipe up and hold from bottom of screen). I need to explicitly "force stop" Spotify to get it to let go of the volume. I have Spotify allowed to autostart in Android settings because I need it to to work with Android auto automatically when I get in the car (if it's not set, even when I tell Google assistant to launch Spotify, Spotify will just not do anything, but that's a different issue).

You need to fix the Spotify Connect toggle to actually let go of the volume. It's currently not doing what you say it is.

MIUI 12, Android 10. Xiaomi mi mix 2s. Spotify v8.7.64.478

for me despite the app being closed it still comes up in my ios media player and my phone volume syncs with it

Hi, I don't like this solution. I want to be able to control what song is playing on my computer from my phone. But I want to change my phone's volume output if for instance, I am watching a tik tok video and it comes on too loud. I still want the volume of spotify to play as normal for the rest of the people at my party, but I am not always in the room, I am still acting as the DJ controlling songs, but my question is HOW DO I DISABLE A FEATURE THAT I DID NOT ASK FOR? Spotify is automatically assuming that I want this feature. I assure you, I do not want spotify making decisions for me, about what the volume buttons do on THE DEVICE THAT I OWN. It is not your decision. Telling me to force-stop the app is not helpful. Make a setting that I can toggle to turn this horrible code off.

Honestly, this is an absolutely horrible "feature". We shouldn't have our phone's volume decided by Spotify. Either

- my computer's Spotify volume is low and the speakers are compensatorily high, making any other computer noise SUPER LOUD

- or my phone just blasts whatever comes out of it SUPER LOUD

- or I have absolutely no remote control over my music.

This is not a hard ask, to disconnect the volume sync.

This is even weirder: my phone doesn't have any instances of Spotify running (so does my Smart Watch), yet when I control my volume on my phone, Spotify keeps syncing with my phone volume. It looks like the app doesn't close entirely.

Yes exactly, I don't understand why this 'feature' is forced onto us
