Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

Hey folks,

We're creating a new thread (here's the old one) to gather reports about the above issue where the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out.

Some users have reported that disabling the following options resolved the issue for them:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Here are also some general troubleshooting steps that are worth trying:

  • Ensure a stable internet connection.
  • Install any pending updates for your device and restart it.
  • Clean reinstall the Spotify app.

If those don't help, let us know the following info so we can relay it to our tech team:

  • The day, time and time zone this has last occurred on (important for checking our log files).
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

We appreciate your cooperation in this!

Here are my insights into this:

1. I have a Samsung Galaxy S23. The issue also used to happen on my previous phone - Google Pixel 5. Spotify version 9.0.76.1126. Android version 15 (1 Aug 2025 patch level)

2. I use USB-C wired headphones.

3. The issue happens in offline as well as online mode.

4. The issue is triggered when music is playing and mobile reception drops in and out. It happens in the lift at work and it happens on trains regularly.

5. I have experimented with various things to try to fix the problem once it occurs. I have tried:

a) Stopping and starting playback of the song. Doesn't fix the problem.

b) Skipping to the next song. Doesn't fix the problem.

c) Minimise Spotify into background, re-open app, stop and start playback. Doesn't fix the problem.

d) Force-killing the Spotify app and restarting. This fixes the problem.

e) In Spotify, toggling playback to a different speaker (e.g. the phone's speaker) and then back to USB headphones. This fixes the problem and I think is a major clue.

I am happy to sideload a developer edition of Spotify that writes logs, recreate the problem and then get the logs off the phone if you want to work with me to debug.

I can also attest that it happens to me as well. And yes it happens if mobile data drops for a second. It makes no sense because a song is supposed to buffer a certain part of the song for this exact scenario. But yet my troubleshooting steps have been about the exact same as yours.

My Question or Issue

  • I've got this problem ever since I changed my old phone (an old Motorola) for this one. Spotify it's the only app that does this. I tried with a lot of other music apps and all of them work fine. The Spotify app is the only one that doesn't work on my phone and in my old one I used the app a lot, so now I'm kinda sad that I can't use it anymore.
