My Question or Issue

There are already a lot of threads about this. But this bug is still not fixed yet.

Podcasts always play in reverse order. (new to old)

But i want to hear them from old to new.

I can change the display order. I can also filter out the episodes i already heard. But this doesn't change anything. It still plays in reverse order, and also filtered episodes.

I already reinstalled Spotify twice. It didn't help.

Please fix this.

Hey @BrookeSpot,

Thanks for reaching out.

Can you try the steps suggested in this thread and provide the rest of the info that was requested? To summarize:

  • Does this happen with all podcasts? If not, please provide links to the affected ones.
  • What happens when you change the filtering and sorting options?
  • Does this occur when logged in a different account or when using a different device?
  • A short video or a few screenshots showing the queue.

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

Please for the love of god fix this. It’s 2024 it should not be an issue playing podcast episodes in the correct order. Get**bleep** together Spotify!!

I have been listening to one podcast for a while no, they have over 200 episodes so I am listening in order from beginning to end. Until recently when one podcast ended the next one would play. Now, for some reason, when I finish a podcast, it goes back to the previous episode that I have already listened to. This often happens while I’m driving and can’t do anything about it. Podcasts should play in the order I am listening to them in, or their needs to be an option to set the order one way or the other, one would think moving consecutively would be the most logical way, you don’t pick up a book and read the last chapter first.

My Question or Issue

My queue is always filled with episodes that i have previously listen to and no matter what I try I can't change the order to play the next episode, it always goes backwards. I have tries to remove everything in queue but then it comes even older episodes but not unplayed.

I'm behind the power curve in this issue, but I've finally grown tired of resetting every episode of every Spotify podcast. Before it was simply playing in reverse order. Now it bounces throughout each catalog as if I have random play set. I will listen to a podcast released today, then one from July. What can I do to fix this?

Whenever I finish an episode of a podcast, instead of playing the next episode it plays an older episode. Usually, it jumps back about 18 episodes. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, clearing the cache, and restarting my phone, but the problem still persists. If I manually remove the older episodes from my queue it works fine as long as I don't switch podcasts, but it is still pretty irritating.

Hey @Charltonsd

Thanks for reaching out!

We tried reproducing the issue but to no avail. Could you let us know what mobile device device this is occurring on?
Additionally, we'd like to know its OS version and current Spotify app version.

With this aside, I'm also wondering if this happens to every podcast or just some of them and I'm interested in seeing what your sorting options for the affected podcasts are. You'll find this button right under the 'Episodes' tab:

Lastly, it would be great if you could send us some screenshots or a video recording of the issue so that we can take a closer look at what's going on.
What we'll need to see is the main page of an affected podcast where the episodes are listed, your podcast sorting options, what episode you play and which episode it switches to after.

Many thanks! We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

P.S. We'd also like to know if you're experiencing this error only on this device or across multiple ones. Cheers!

I am now having the same issue, but I am using an iOS phone and connecting it to my car’s audio via Bluetooth. I have checked, and I have the most up-to-date version of the Spotify app on my phone, and the most current version of iOS. This issue originally started up for me a year or two ago, but I was able to get it resolved by restarting my phone, updating my OS, etc. But it’s very frustrating that I have to go through a whole checklist of processes every time the issue pops up again, just to get the playback of my podcast to work correctly. This has only been an issue with podcasts for me. Nothing else. And now the known ‘fixes’ that I have been able to find on Spotify’s website don’t even seem to be working. Any help?

The Spotify app version is 8.9.70.556. My phone is a T607DL. I'm not sure how to find out what OS version it is using. Here are some pictures.

Hopefully, these can help illustrate what is happening. This problem is only happening on this device, when I use Spotify on my Playstation everything works fine. I have tried several different podcasts, and this issue has come up with everyone that I've tried.

Hey @Charltonsd,

Thanks for all additional info 🙂

We had a look at the screenshots you sent over and we see that the podcast currently is sorted by Oldest. Could you try changing it to Newest instead to see if you notice any difference? Once it's done, start a different podcast and then head back to the first podcast that you changed the settings on.

You can also try adding the Unplayed filter, if you haven't listened to the newer episodes before, as this should prioritize those episodes.

Should the current app behavior still persist for you, it would be great if you could check the OS version. The exact steps may vary a bit depending on the device version, however, you should be able to find it in the device's settings > System > About phone.

Let us know how you get on!

I have tried sorting by newest and filtering so that only unplayed episodes are displayed and that still hasn't fixed the problem. Even when I sort by unplayed, it will still put previously played episodes in my queue. My phone is running on Android version 13.

Hey there @Charltonsd

Thanks for getting back to us.

Could you let us know if this started after a specific event such as an update either of Spotify or the OS of your phone?

On another note, would you mind asking a friend or a relative to log in to their account on your device to see if they can replicate this behavior with their account? It'd also be useful if you could log in to your account on a different phone to check if the same happens.

We'll be on the lookout.

I don't remember any recent updates to either Spotify or my phone before this problem occurred. I was however in a different country when I first encountered this issue, if that's relevant.

Hey @Charltonsd,

Thank you for keeping in contact.

Just to cover all the basics, since there's a newer version of the app than the one you shared previously, would you mind performing a clean reinstall of the app by following the steps in this article. This is often an overlooked step, but it’s more thorough than a quick one and can be helpful in getting rid of any cache that might be causing trouble.

If the issue persists, could you try with a different Wi-Fi network to see if it makes any difference? If you don't have another network, you can use a mobile data hotspot to test it.

Hope this helps. We'll be on the lookout.

This morning I was trying different podcasts and sorting options, and the extra episodes were coming up in the queue every time and then partway through it just stopped happening. I don't know what changed, but for now I can't contribute further here.

My Question or Issue

I like to listen to playlists while driving. I want to listen to them in the order they were made (oldest to newest). On my phone, no matter what way I sort them they go backwards. So at the end of episode 30, it will play episode 29. Even when I've filtered to only show unplayed and sorted from oldest to newest. It is very annoying when I'm driving because I cannot change it and when I skip back on the car bluetooth control it goes back 15 seconds. Cannot concentrate on skipping back through multiple episodes while driving. So I either need to pull in everytime a new episode starts to change it or listen to something I've already listened to recently.

On my chromebook, I had a different problem. I used to play playlists for my dog to keep her calm while I was out. But on the chromebook it picks a random suggested episode from a completely different podcast after your episode finishes. I had to stop doing this and buy a radio after I went out and left my dog in my mother's house listening to Elyse Myers and came back to it playing a Rotten Mangos episode about some guy who ended up in a **bleep** cult. Awkward! God knows what else it played in between.

Podcasts seem to only play in chronological order, however the default view is most recent first. Please, allow us to play episodes in reverse if we want to or play them in the order shown/we select.

When I find podcast I will listen to the top (most recent) episode only for it to stop playing at the end. If im driving or otherwise busy, i cant start queing songs or making pIaylists. want it to keep playing down the list, in the order I see them

There are several list view options to chose from. But what is the point if they all play chronologically!?

My Question or Issue

I'm listening to the podcast "So Supernatural" and I have it ordered from oldest to newest. For some reason, it's playing the episode listed above the previous one when that finishes instead of moving to the one below like it's supposed to. I really haven't changed anything that I know of that could have affected it.

I was able catch in a recording when previously played episodes were added to the playlist. We had listened to an episode of the podcast early in the day and then switched to a music playlist, listened to that for maybe half an hour, and then later in the evening I started screen recording before switching back to the podcast. When I go back to the podcast, it keeps the sort order I had selected (oldest first) but it always goes to all episodes, so I switched to unplayed. I started recording after selecting the episode to play next, and when I went into the up next playlist, 16 older episodes were at the beginning of the playlist. I can't seem to replicate this when I switch briefly to something else and then switch back, but only if I listen to something else for awhile, leave the app, and go back to the podcast later.
