None of the solutions I've tried work. Might as well cancel my Premium
since there's no point in my paying to download when it cripples my mobile.

I posted the same question a few days back but can't find that post now. However since then my phone Blackberry dtek50 stalled as it had run out of memory on internal storage. I deleted my songs and uninstalled spotify. I had some issues trying to install spotify again as it kept saying "not available in my country"even though I was using a vpn from a country it is available in. I have a premium account from where I live but work overseas where spotify is not aviable and the blackberry is my work phone. Anyway after several reboots and hard resets I managed to get spotify installed. After this installation, in the settings menu the storage option was available and by default it had selected sd card. I tried a couple of songs and they saved on the sd card. So now all my playlists are saved on the sd card. Point of interest the sd card is NOT formatted as an internal storage, its as portable storage. There is too much information I need on the card and I was not looking at reformatting the sd card as suggested in some posts. My phone operates on android 6+. Hope this post helps in some way.

Before trying anything else check that your SD card is formatted as External (called portable in Android 6.01) storage not Internal storage. If this is true then you should be able to select it as default storage for Spotify.

If your card is formatted as Internal storage, back up any critical data it contains. Then change it to External storage. Now clear data and cache from the Spotify app.

Once you log back into Spotify the card should already be selected as default storage.

Wow! This thread has a lot of comments! This was the first Google search result to "Spotify data storage android". I've read through a lot of the comments, and there should be no reason to need to delete anything, uninstall Spotify, etc. I'm on 6.0.1 Android with Spotify 7.5.0.1076. For me, I was able to open Spotify, click on Your Library at the bottom, and then the gear in the top right for settings. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and third from the bottom is an option to configure where Spotify storage is located. I selected SDcard and within about 45 seconds, 3.2 GB of data was moved to my SDcard, freeing up a ton of space on my internal storage. Hopefully this helped someone still searching for this answer.

The secret is that the SD card must be formatted as "External" storage

The Downloads setting is non-existent and the com.spotify.mobile.android.ui folder no longer exists.

Has anyone else figured out a new way to store downloaded music to the SD card?

What version of Android and Spotify are you running?

The folder is com.spotify.music and has been for some time. Maybe post some relevant information and I'll try to help.

  1. Device you are using
  2. Android version
  3. Spotify version
  4. Free space shown in android settings>storage for internal and external storage

I've done a clean install of spotify on Android 6.0.1 MotoX Play.

Spotify v. 7.6.0.1219 armV7

I ran out of internal storage before, but I've cleaned it up since and the option is still not available

What are you seeing as the third option from the bottom in the list of settings inside the Spotify app?

When you first inserted your SDcard into your phone, how did you format it? The SDcard has to be setup as External Storage for it to work, from what I understand. Could you try copying your data off, reformatting your SDcard, and copying your data back to see if the setting is there?

So you have formatted your SD card as internal rather than portable storage. This means that you don't actually have an external SD card for apps to see and android OS decides where to put data and apps.

You can either live with that although, on a modern phone, you are likely to see things running more slowly and removing the SD card will probably cause apps to stop running. Alternatively, you can bite the bullet and reformat the SD card as portable storage then reinstall any apps which no longer work.

If you search Google, you'll find many articles about portable vs internal storage.

Your SD card must be formatted as External storage NOT Internal storage.
Then it will work.
