Question  is there a time limit for a free account?

Do I have to subscribe after a certain  amount of time...or will I be able to keep it free?

Im happy to answer your question. First, the free version of Spotify (non-premium) is always available to you at no cost, but you will hear ads between some of your songs. Further, the free version of Spotify does not allow you to download music to listen offline, you will have a limited number of songs you can skip, you won't be able to play every song on mobile. 

If you are opening up a new account, you can start a 3-month free trial that you can cancel anytime; if you don't cancel, you will opt to pay $9.99/month for Spotify Premium. For more information about the 3-month trial, click here.
