Gift Cards for current subscribers?

I want to purchase a gift card (6-month subscription) for a buddy of mine.  He's currently a subscriber, but money is usually tight, so thought 6 months of free Spotify Premium would be a nice gift.

Can current Premium subscribers redeem those gift cards?  Or are they only for FREE users (who are not currently paying)?

That works just fine. I redeemed a gift card as subscriber too.

The time gets added to the remaining time on his profile.
