Request for Sensitivity in Content Recommendations for Ukrainian Users

Request for Sensitivity in Content Recommendations for Ukrainian Users

Dear Spotify,

I am writing to address a concern that has significant cultural and emotional implications for many of your users, particularly in Ukraine. As you are aware, the ongoing imperialistic russian war in Ukraine, has had profound and painful effects on the lives of millions of Ukrainians. The war, marked by severe trauma, loss, and displacement, has deeply impacted the Ukrainian people's relationship with Russian language and culture.

In this context, a lot of Ukrainian users of Spotify have reported the platform's algorithm frequently recommending Russian content. This includes users who have not previously engaged with such content or have actively avoided it. For many, the Russian language has become inextricably linked to the suffering and anguish caused by the russians. Consequently, encountering Russian content on a platform intended for entertainment and relaxation can be distressing and triggering.

While I recognize Spotify's commitment to offering a diverse range of content to its global audience, I believe it is crucial to consider the unique and sensitive situation faced by Ukrainian users. To address this, I propose the following solutions:

  1. Opt-Out Feature for Specific Content: Implement a feature allowing users to opt out of content from specific languages or regions. This will enable Ukrainian users to avoid Russian content and create a more comfortable and personalized listening experience.

  2. Sensitive Content Recommendations: Enhance the recommendation algorithm to be more sensitive to the geopolitical context. This could involve reducing the frequency of Russian content suggested to users in Ukraine or those who have a history of engaging with Ukrainian content.

  3. User Feedback Integration: Incorporate user feedback mechanisms to understand and adapt to individual preferences, especially in regions experiencing conflict or tension.

I understand that music and podcasts are universal languages that transcend borders and conflicts. However, in times of turmoil and strife, the cultural and linguistic nuances become more pronounced and carry a deeper significance. My request is not about limiting cultural exchange but about providing a safe and considerate listening environment for all your users, respecting their emotional and cultural contexts.

I hope Spotify will consider this request seriously and take steps to ensure its platform remains a source of comfort and enjoyment for everyone, regardless of their geopolitical situation.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

UPD

To everyone who’s commented along the lines of, “You can’t expect Spotify to get rid of an entire language of music just because it offends you. With that logic, they should remove every language that has caused harm to anyone”: please read the post carefully.

We are simply asking for an option that allows users to configure languages they prefer not to hear. This does not mean we are asking Spotify to remove that content from the platform altogether.

Absolutely true

Completely agree! I consciously avoid russian tracks, but I still see them often

Totally agree! Not only it is helpful for Ukrainian users of Spotify. It would also greatly benefit Ukrainian artists that just CAN'T find their listeners because of the russian artists.

Agree! I've been trying to find an add-on to filter Russian artists, but there's nothing. That would be an awesome feature ❤️

Completely agree!

Completely agree, after russian invasion I completely stopped listening to russian artists and removed all from my library. Nevertheless after 2 years I still see a lot of russian artists in my discover weekly. I’m tired of banning them and Spotify still adds them to my recommendations. I’m thinking about changing streaming platform because recommendations are useless now.

Підтримую. Це вкрай важливий запит!

Підтримую, вже втомився дизлайкати то все де тільки можна, а в результаті повний нуль.

100% agree with everything in this post!

For example, 90% of discover weekly are russian artists but I don’t listen to them

Not to mention that streaming content from Russia generates revenue, the taxes from which are paid, of course, in Russia. Taxes which are then used to attack us.

So even besides the emotional need to detach from it, there's the pragmatic aspect of not wanting to help finance our own murder by letting Spotify play suggestions unsupervised.

I agree with everything, i am tired of russian music in recomendations. I don't listen to it anymore, but it always pops up. The recomendation algorithm needs to be tuned.

I've been waiting for a feature to not see the russian bands I blocked explicitly in my recommendations, discover weekly etc etc. I still think that Spotify provides unparalleled experience on discovering great music, yet I have to cut myself out of great features which just work wrong.
Please help us in Ukraine to stop to deal with PTSD symptoms as we stumbling upon music of the people who made so much pain to us.
Please at least fix the algorithm of suggesting blocked artists.

I also would like to see this feature implemented, as I am growing tired of removing Russian songs from the Discover Weekly playlist even when I don't have any Russian content in the library.

We desperately need this issue to be properly addressed. These constant recommendations of russian artists are pissing me off. I also keep getting recomendations on the artists whose songs I deliberately clicked not to play

Totally agree! I hope Spotify will address this issue accordingly

That option would be really great! I'm sick and tired of Russian podcasts and audiobooks on my Recommended page, and, unlike with artists, you can't even block podcasts so they won't pop up on your page.

It would be truly a valuable feature!

Totally agree

I 100% agree! It would be great.
