[Linux] Spotify 0.8.8 for GNU/Linux

Solved!

[Linux] Spotify 0.8.8 for GNU/Linux

Update: Spotify for Linux v0.9.4 is now available. See here.

Hi everybody!

Today we pushed the latest and greatest Spotify client to our repository. This time you're getting the good stuff first, this version has only been rolled out to a small percentage of Windows/Mac users. It contains some of the features that were presented on our recent press event, such as being able to follow artists and tastemakers. Have a look at the brand new Follow page, where you can find interesting artists and other people to follow. You'll get updates on their activity, such as newly released albums etc.

As for Linux-specific fixes, there are some minor bug fixes. The biggest change is the packaging. The client now is installed to /opt and it uses XDG mechanisms to register icons and menus. The executable is now also built without hardcoded paths to libraries. This means that the folder can be put anywhere and just run from there. Unfortunately, this release still depends on libssl0.9.8. We'll try to get rid of that in upcoming releases!

The new client is just a "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" away!

What, you don't already have Spotify installed? Lookie here: http://www.spotify.com/download/previews/

Don't use Debian? Check out these zip packages:

Edit: updated to include the zip packages.

When I check my "About Spotify", I get "Version 0.9.1.55.gbdd3d79f".  Is this the lastest version?

At the time of this writing: Yes.

In some weeks: Maybe still yes.

Linux version lags some days/weeks behind Windows version. But to be fair: Since it's a preview, this sounds legit to me.

Better get a new version some days later, and instead getting it with less bugs and more features than the previous version. Sadly, this is not always the case, too... *sigh*

Either the 0.8.8 or 0.9.0 client went live on linux before the other platforms, it just depends on when the guys have time to work on it I guess!

Over a half year and nothing happened, no updates nothing, still hardcoded libs that are out-of-date allready ... Seriously is it so hard to compile a new version of it?

Time to cancel the premium version of this service i guess.

A bug I have found not sure if already noted that when you tried to Reboot on Ubuntu 13.04 spotify stops the reboot and you have to manually force a reboot because of it.

Well it still uses hardlinked outdated librarys, atleast what is on there repo servers and its not like i could download the source and build one for my own.

At the moment i have to use community software which is hardly supported and is the work of tons of volunteers, i dont expect that spotify supports these projects in any way.

Hi guys!

I am not able to post in Bugs (this option is disabled?) so will post here:

I am using Spotify Linux Preview and Share option is not working correctly.

Just nothing happens, my friends get nothing on facebook chat like when I'm using this feature on Windows client.

PLEASE make it work, such important feature...

Cheers!

There does appear to be other reports of sharing and playlist issues lately, hopefully just a temporary blip!

Hi guys,

I just installed the newer fixes. It seems nice, all in all. Almost as on any other platform.

But I got one major issue:
When I try to minimize to tray it maximizes right after again. Is this maybe my own fault or is it some kind of bug?
I can't imagine that none other experiences the same if it is a common problem 🙂

Best,
Jeppe

Hehe I have it kind of vice-versa. If I hide spotify to the tray, and then I show it with dbus (org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Raise), then I just need to _move_ the window and as soon as I release the mouse button, the window dissapears tot ray icon again.

Gave me a good laughter the first few times. Then not anymore.

I get that issue as well, but letting it run from the tray works fine. Otherwise, I just installed this after having given up Windows and I must say, I'm very pleased at how much has been put into it. It works well enough for my purposes. Keep up the good work!

Installed this on my machine a while ago and have been absolutely loving it.  No issues at all on Ubuntu 12.4.  Big thanks for putting a Linux version out there!

Premium customer since US launch. All as been fine on the latest beta release running Ubuntu 13.04 until this past week, I keep getting dependency errors and the app crashes. I have deleted the app and all files, fresh install, problem persist. Any suggestions?

A bit aggravated paying for premium and only having access via my HTC One. I do use the home PC as a media center.

When do we get latest client for Linux? We are paying customers aswell, i think we deserve new clients together with Mac and Windows.

Nice, found it! 😉

Shouldn't Windows, Mac and Linux have their respective sub-forums?

We had that before, if I remember correctly.

At least they should clean up the mess. Why is this thread for an outdated version (0.8.8) still sticky? They could at least rename it to "Spotify for GNU/Linux". Would be nice to have a sticky thread for Linux users, since we are a minority.

SpotCommander - The most elegant, intuitive, feature-rich & universal remote control for Spotify, exclusive for Linux users!

Ya, since they don't provide a historical package for spotify (multiple versions) this should be renamed.

Currently I have "media-sound/spotify-0.9.4.183" packaged.

Skipping songs in Radio doesn't work.

Does it work if you use the control buttons in the bottom left corner or not at all?

Works, but central image doesn't change.

Try running it as root; I've notced that audio_driver_linux.cpp has trouble creating a directory /run/user/100/pulse (permission denied) and that causes all sorts of problems.

Just go to your terminal and type:

sudo spotify
