My Question or Issue

The Media Keys Play/Pause/Next/Previous on the keyboard don't work with the Spotify Application.

The Media Keys work with other applications in Linux such as Clementine and also work with the Spotify Application in Windows just fine. I would think it should be easy to make the media keys work just like they do in Clementine and other media applications in Linux.

Spotify Linux version:

1.0.96.181.gf6bc1b6b

On Ubuntu 16:04

Media keys still have no effect.

I've tried re-assigning the global shortcuts as suggested with no difference.

2019 and it still doesn't work.

snap 2.36.3
snapd 2.36.3
series 16
ubuntu 16.04
kernel 4.4.0-141-generic

Spotify version 1.0.94.262.g3d5c231c, Copyright (c) 2018, Spotify Ltd

Spotify installed via apt-get though, as the spotify site instructions tells.

One more workmate has the same issue, which was expected since she has the same setup as me.

Another detail is that the media keys work with other applications.

This is a new feature that I would like to not vote for. 🙂 I upgraded spotify Monday(Yesterday) morning via apt. The media keys have worked for me without any issue until Monday after the upgrade. Here is the version I am running now:

root@nparry-laptop1:~# dpkg -l | grep spotify
ii spotify-client 1:1.0.94.262.g3d5c231c-9 amd64 Spotify streaming music client

I have this spotify repo setup on my box:

root@nparry-laptop1:~# grep -i 'spotify' /etc/apt/sources.list | grep -v '#'
deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free

I am running Ubuntu 16.04:

root@nparry-laptop1:~# lsb_release -d
Description:	Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS

Let me know if there is anything else I can provide that would assist you.

Also, nice work with this spotify linux client in general. This is the only problem I have experienced with it since I discovered Spotify. So, thanks!

I also have this issue since the most recent upgrade to

1.0.94.262.g3d5c231c

Is there a way to flag this to the actual Spotify support/Linux team for resolution?

Per @navnav Spotify support are reportedly aware of it.

Just updated ubuntu 16.04 today and media keys stopped working... Been searching around for more than an hour until I found the thread. The installed version is 1.0.94.262.g3d5c231c-9

Could not find the previous .deb version, anyone knows where to find it? It's really bad not being able to use the media keys!

I was able to download a copy of spotify-client_1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5_amd64.deb (the last unaffected version) from one of the 2 below mirrors:

Downgrading didn't work for me.

What version did you downgrade to?

I haven't had working media keys on Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS since version 1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5

1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5 didn't work for me.

I also tried an earlier version that, I cannot remember which one specifically, but it was an early 2018 release.

The following probably only serves to add to the mystery at this point.

I have a laptop with built in media keys that is running Debian Stretch and is on spotify 1.0.96.181.gf6bc1b6b-12 30 stable. Unlike my Ubunut Xenial laptop, it is not encountering any problem with the media keys. (The media keys on the Xenial laptop are on a Logitch K750 keyboard and they are still working with snap version 1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5 refernced in my prior posts.)

Media keys still not working in Spotify for me with the following:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

Linux 4.4.0-141-generic #167-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 5 10:40:15 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

spotify 1.0.96.181.gf6bc1b6b-12 30 stable spotify✓ -

Reverting to the snap below restores expected media key functions within Spotify.
spotify 1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5 21 stable spotify✓ -

I have this problem too, in snap version on Ubuntu 18.04, used to works before

if it matters I'm using premium and version 1.0.93.242.gc2341a27.

The problem persists in snap 1.0.93.244.g1e3a05e7-18.

Reverting to snap 1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5 restores functionality.

*Please* fix this regression so it stops breaking the media keys.

Confirm.

I pay for spotify, surely others with the same problem do to, so could we please get a response from someone at Spotify?

I also had the same problem with a recent update, but I've just managed to fix it!

If you remove spotify via snap: 'snap remove spotify', and then install via apt-get (instructions here: https://www.spotify.com/uk/download/linux/) that fixes the media keys issue.

The version that was installed via apt-get, for me, was version 1.0.80.480.g51b03ac3.

With this solution, you won't enjoy the benefits of snap updating your software automatically, but TBH, I prefer it that way.

That workaround installs an even older version of the application than the most recent one where the media keys still work (1.0.89.313.g34a58dea-5). Unfortunately it doesn't actually solve the problem of the media keys being broken in recent versions of the software.

Hopefully this issue exists in the dev team bug tracking system and is getting the attention it needs.

The snap updated to 1.0.94.262.g3d5c231c-9 and the media keys *still* don't work!

Unfortunately it looks like these forums are just a way to keep us talking to ourselves and pretend that's support

Same here with 1.0.92.390.g2ce5ec7d on Ubuntu.
