I just installed the latest preview on my Mac, and have enabled the crossfade option in the preferences, but new tracks just start playing straight away with no crossfading occurring.
Is this not working, or am I confused as how the crossfade should work (it says in the blog "fading out one song as you bring another in" but it doesn't appear to work like that)?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hello there and welcome to the community.
I am afraid but actually, crossfade is not available through the function connect.
You can vote to add your support to this idea running here.
Happy listening anyway 🙂

Hey! Try re-enabling this option. At least restart Spotify then.
I've tried re-enabling the option, restarting Spotify, and even clearing the Spotify settings (under ~/Library/Application Support/Spotify) but I still can't seem to get any crossfade working. Should crossfade work when you double-click a new track to play it while a previous track is playing or am I misinterpreting what it should do?
It doesn't matter what I have the time set to, when I play a new track the current track stops and the new tracks starts at full volume with no crossfading between the tracks.
I am running this on an iMac with Mac OS X 10.6.8 if that makes any difference.
Do you have "Gapless" enabled too? I noticed that Crossfade does not work if Gapless is turned on too. Not sure if this is a bug or by design, but FYI - if you want Crossfade to work, disable Gapless.
This was the solution for me, so thanks.
Makes sense of course but it would have been nice for there to have either been a message stating that or make the actual checkboxes mutually exclusive!
It turns out I was confused about what Spotify means by crossfading.
The blog article says "Another much-requested feature is crossfade – fading out one song as you bring another in."
This implies that you can start a new track at any point and the currently playing track will crossfade to the new one. However, it doesn't appear to mean that at all and crossfading only happens when the current track reaches the end.
It would be great if there was a way to crossfade before a track has finished playing - this could be great for parties, etc.

This worked for me.
Although when I had Gapless + Crossfade activated on my local files, it did both, but when I stream the music, I must have gapless turned off in order for crossfade to work 🙂
Nathanduvall...Dude you rock
Cross-fading is not working consistenly on my iphone either, and none of the solutions above work. It does work with gapless playback between some of the songs on my playlist, but not otthers. I believe the problem may be related to local versus non-local files, though I'm not certain. It works fine for exactly the same playlist and the same settings on my mac. I also wonder if it has something to do with the format of my local files, because it doesn't happen with all my local files. Weird.
Turn off "Gapless Playback"
Still not working for me after removing Gapless... 😞
3 sec fade did not work - but 12 does! happy!
Hi I wanna use the crossfading option for a party too. When i activate it in the settings nothing happens, the tracks keep going straight after another even at "12 seconds". "Gapless" is disabled, this was the solution for a user who had the same problem, but even if i disable "gapless" it does not work. If tried everything, i relaunched spotify, i logged out and logged in, etc..

Are those local files (appearing in the Local Files tab of Spotify) or tracks being streamed from Spotify?

spotify just offered me an update and somehow it works now.
tank you though
guys! i just figured this out - CROSSFADE ONLY WORKS FOR SONGS YOU HAVE IN YOUR PLAY QUEUE
Hello, I report also that crossfade does not work properly. It works only when songs are in queve. But what if I want to stop song and change to antoher on the fly, the crossfade don't work. This is very bad in party situations when you find people don't like the song, so you would want in a good spot to crossfade next song or hit next song button to start on the fly new song. But then comes the **bleep**tiest feature of soptify, crossfade does not work. Song is stoppe right away, then next song is starting to load. PLEASE, PLEASE soptify, update your crossfade to work ALWAYS, when hitting next button, when starting new song via play button or in any method, when starting a song use crossfade songs. Please fix this.
