macOS Application Segmentation Fault

Solved!

macOS Application Segmentation Fault

Device

Apple M2 Pro, MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2023

Operating System

macOS Sonoma 14.7.2 (23H311)

My Question or Issue

Clicking any button on the UI causes a segmentation fault. Application is unusable as a result. This will also cause an issue along the application upgrade path when the issue is fixed. (i.e. clicking the user Profile icon to upgrade also crashes the application)

```
/Applications/Spotify.app/Contents/MacOS/Spotify
Hi there @onezeroquickdraw,
Thanks for reaching out. We'll be glad to help you get to the bottom of this.
This is quite an odd and rare issue. When did this start happening? Does this happen every time you open the app now or does it start crashing after something specific happens?
In any case, to cover our bases try performing a full clean reinstall first. This will clear any damaged cache which should hopefully clear out these lingering issues. If that doesn't work, the user in this thread appears to have resolved a similar problem by enabling SIP, so try that too.
If that doesn't work, a somewhat similar issue was resolved in this thread and was caused due to conflict with other programs. Check out the steps there and try them out for yourself.
If the issue persists after all that, let us know so we can look into this further. Also let us know the exact Spotify Version you're using.
Keep us posted.
Every time, when you click any button in the UI
Tried this already, cannot get past the login page now (i.e. clicking the login button crashes the app)
SIP is enabled
```
$ csrutil status
System Integrity Protection status: enabled.
```
Don't have magnet, but have Rectangle installed. No change in behavior when Rectangle is not running.
```

macOS (Apple Silicon)

Hey @onezeroquickdraw

Thanks for getting back to us and for sending us all these info.

As a next step, could you try running Spotify in Safe mode? This would help us determine if the issue is related to third party extensions.

If the issue persists, would you mind sending us a short screen recording of the issue happening so we can take a closer look? You can attach it to your next response by using the Insert Video option in the post editor. You can also upload it to Google Drive and share the link with us (make sure the video has the permissions for anyone to see it).

We'll be waiting for your reply.

Happy to keep experimenting, but I think we have enough information to escalate to the dev team. The application should never "Segmentation Fault" in any circumstance.

Hey @onezeroquickdraw

Thanks for your reply.

We understand where you're coming from, and we'd like to gather as much info as we can in order to narrow down the possible cause of the issue. We've been receiving multiple reports about the app crashing when clicking anywhere in the desktop app in this thread (as @Joan mentioned previously). We think it's possible that the issue you're experiencing is similar, so could you check that thread again to see if you're using any of the tools the fellow users mentioned? (There are other ones, not only Magnet or Rectangle). If so, and disabling it solves the issue, we can confirm that we've already reported it and the team are currently looking into it.

If the issue you're experiencing is different, could you send us the info we asked for above? It'd help us further investigate what might be causing this.

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

I have a similar issue: spotify crashes without consistency, not only clicking on buttons but just running, and my exact version is
```
macOS (Apple Silicon)
1.2.70.409.gd4fa4141
```
I don't have any of those programs.
I got it crashed in safe mode too.

I get this warning
[0827/075803.805656⚠️third_party/crashpad/crashpad/util/process/process_memory_mac.cc:94] mach_vm_read(0x16f2a8000, 0x8000): (os/kern) invalid address (1)

and then, just after that I get
[0827/075804.120634:ERROR:third_party/crashpad/crashpad/util/file/directory_reader_posix.cc:43] opendir /path/to/Library/Caches/com.spotify.client/attachments/eda031a1-0804-487a-9c06-5981cc8c59a9: No such file or directory (2)
zsh: segmentation fault /Applications/Spotify.app/Contents/MacOS/Spotify

Hey folks,

Thanks for the cooperation and all the info you've provided!

We've raised this with our tech folks so they can investigate further and will let you know as soon as we get an update. In the meantime, make sure you keep the app up-to-date in order to not miss out on a potential fix.
