My Question or Issue

For the past couple of months, Spotify has stopped working on my PC (Windows). The app simply won’t open.

I’ve tried completely uninstalling Spotify — including deleting all leftover files — and reinstalling it, but it still doesn’t work. The only version that works is Spotify for Windows (64 bit) 1.2.68.528.g50f97d42, but I have to reinstall that version every time I want to open the app.

Hello @_FoolyK,

Thanks for reaching out via the Community and for letting us know that you've reinstalled the app.

Could you let us know if you're seeing any error messages upon attempting to start Spotify and did you notice in case this behavior occurred after something specific for the first time (Windows/driver update for example)?

It's worth mentioning that on Windows you can download the app both from our website and the MS store and we often advise users to download and test with the version that they weren't using so far. Consider going through the steps for a clean reinstall before this, to make sure you've removed any leftover files which may cause issues.

Additionally, make sure that:

  • The firewall isn't blocking Spotify.
  • Toggle any settings of the antivirus app you're using.
  • Disable any VPNs.

Keep us posted.

Hello, there is no error message, it only open for a couple of seconds (it doesn't show anything only the grey backgorund) and it closes.
I tried both the website version and the MS store one. I don't use any VPN or antivirus program and I tried disabling the Windows firewall and it still didn't work 😞

Hey @_FoolyK,

Thank you for keeping in contact and for the info shared.

To continue investigating this behavior, would you mind checking if the Web Player works properly on the same PC or if it has the same behavior?

Also, have you checked if running the app as administrator makes any difference? If you haven't tried this, you just need to press the Windows key on your keyboard, type the word Spotify, right-click over the Spotify app result and select the option Run as administrator as seen below.

If the issue persists, we'd recommend clearing any entries which contain Spotify from the host files on your computer. To do so, you can follow the instructions mentioned in this post.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

The web player works fine and I've tried running it as administrador, didn't work

Hey @_FoolyK,

Thanks for your reply.

Just to confirm, have you made sure that all updates for your OS have been installed? If yes, then check this Windows troubleshooting guide for some more things to try and let us know if they help.

We'll be on the lookout for your response.

Hello,
I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify after checking everything else (Windows updates, firewall settings, other apps, etc.), but it still doesn’t work.

The strange thing is that an older version of Spotify works fine — but as soon as I close and reopen it, the app automatically updates itself and then stops working again.

Thank you for the cooperation and provided video @_FoolyK.

We don't advise using older versions of the Spotify app as this can cause various issues.

Something else that comes to mind when troubleshooting this behavior is if you've got any 3rd party or other sort of apps installed on your computer that may be interfering with the launch of Spotify. If you can think of such an app you could test with disabling it to see if this will make a difference.

Additionally, make sure to also remove other 3rd party apps' access to Spotify from the Account Page > Manage apps > Remove access.

Keep us posted!
