My Question or Issue

Windows on my desktop updated this morning and as a result, my desktop Spotify app and Android app are no longer recognizing each other via the connect a device feature. I am no longer able to control my desktop Spotify app with my phone, because the devices aren't listed on either connect list.

I have flushed my DNS, restarted both devices, uninstalled and reinstalled the apps on both devices and restarted my router to no avail.   Not at all tech savvy, so any ELI5 explanation on how to fix this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Sounds like this may have been done my some of your previous steps, but can you make sure that your apps are both on the latest software and that they are both logged in to the same device? Additionally, can you check to make sure that both your phone and windows computer are both on the latest available software.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify on both my desktop and phone, so those should be up to date.  I only have one Spotify account that they're both logged into.  The phone is connected to the only wifi I have and the computer is technically connected to the internet by ethernet directly to the router, but it always has been and was still able to detect that the phone was connected to the wifi.   Windows just updated this morning and my phone is set to auto update, so I can't imagine that anything is out of date at this point.

Is the fact that the computer is connected via ethernet instead of wifi now somehow insufficient?  I don't understand why that would have suddenly changed?

That seems like a very bizarre issue and I am not sure what may be causing it. Perhaps it will go away in time as things update/reload in the background.

One other option is you can try something like this: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Ongoing-Issues/Connecting-to-the-Nuvo-audio-system-not-working/idc-...

I tried the advice in your link and also https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/228008727-Arris-TG1672G and it has not fixed the issue.

Hey @Mel677,

Thanks for the reply.

Would it be possible to switch the internet connections for a bit with an e.g. a hot spot from your phone? You can also use USB tethering and see if this resolves the issue.

Let us know how that went,

Cheers!

I connected my PC via USB tethering to my phone, restarted Spotify on both devices and it's still not working.

Hi there @Mel677,

Thank you for your reply and for trying out the troubleshooting that's been provided.

To start with, can you head to this thread and follow the suggestions that's been shared in the solution post?

If the issue persists - can you let us know if it works with the web player and clarify if you  can't see the desktop app in your mobile app list either, or if it's just the desktop app that's not showing any connected devices?

Keep us posted 🙂

Have a great Friday and start of your weekend!

What thread? There is no link in your post. Thanks.

And to be clear, I currently cannot see my desktop app in my mobile app or my mobile app in my desktop app. Neither application is detecting each other.

Something else I've noticed since this started, is that Spotify no longer displays as a status in Discord when I'm using the Spotify desktop app.  It DOES display as a status when I'm using the mobile app, though.  I assume this is somehow related to my issue.

me too, I also did all of those things but Desktop App seems to be has a actual problem. All of my other devices cannot recognize when I'm using the desktop and it doesn't also show on my discord.

Hey @Mel677,

Thank you for keeping in contact and for the clarification.

Since the issue started after an update, and Discord is not recognizing the playback either; it could be related to some damaged cache stored from the previous version on your PC. We understand you've already tried some troubleshooting steps including reinstalling. However, we'd like to suggest a Clean reinstall by following the steps in this article, as this is more thorough than a quick one and can be helpful in getting rid of any cache that might be causing trouble.

Also, if the issue persists, would you mind checking in the Web Player to see if it makes any difference as @Jeremy suggested?

Let us know how it goes.

The clean reinstall is the same way I uninstalled/reinstalled it the first time, but I did it again and it did not work.

I can confirm that the web player DOES work, though.  I am able to use my phone as a remote for the web app, and Discord is showing it as a status.

Hey @Mel677,

Thanks for your reply and for the detailed info.

In this case, we'd like to confirm, is this happening on another computer? It'd be awesome if you could check. If possible, you can ask for the computer of a relative or a friend to open your account and check.

On another note, you might need to check for any local settings on your device that could be blocking the app. In case there's an antivirus software or such that could be restricting access to the app, try whitelisting Spotify.

Lastly, and just to confirm, do you use a VPN on your computer?

We'll keep an eye on your response!

I had a friend of mine access my account on their computer and they were able to connect their desktop app to their phone and vice versa.  However, they were using win11 and an iphone, not sure if that matters.  I've attached a screencap of their phone showing the connection and also showing my Galaxy S9 in the list of optional devices.  This is the file "IMG_16511".  When *I* access the connect menu on my desktop app, my phone is not listed at all. (screen capture provided titled "capture")

I have also completely uninstalled my antivirus (sophos home) and doublechecked the windows firewall settings.  Spotify is listed as allowed, yet the feature still will not function.

I do not use a VPN.

Just to provide more clarity to that screen capture, I was listening to my account through the web player when he logged in. He started the app on his computer and his phone and had the option to connect his phone (iPhone) to his computer (spaceball-11) and was also able to see my phone (galaxy s9) in the list of available devices, whereas I cannot. He was able to make the connection from his iPhone to his desktop and control his desktop app with his phone.

Hey @Mel677,

Thank you for keeping in contact and for the info shared.

Since your friend's PC recognized your Android phone, this issue could be device-related. To make sure of this, we'd recommend clearing any entries which contain Spotify from the host files on your computer as they can affect the proper behavior of the app. Follow the instructions in this post.

After this, restart your PC, log out from both devices and log back in using the same credentials to force the sync between your devices.

If the issue persists, include in your next response the Spotify version you're currently running on both devices.

We'll be on the lookout.

There are no spotify or fastly entries in my host file.

Desktop version: Spotify for Windows  1.1.92.647.ga4397eb7

Android version: 8.7.62.398

Hey there,

Thanks for all the troubleshooting so far.

The described issue looks like related to your network setup. Could you try resetting your router?

Are you using the Microsoft Store version of the app or the one from the Spotify site? Try switching between the two.

Is it possible for you to reinstall the OS of the PC, if not much of a hassle?

Keep us posted,

Cheers!

As I've stated in the previous replies, I've reset my router multiple times already.

I was using the website version of the application, but just installed the microsoft store version, which did not fix the issue.

I'm really not at all interested in going through the effort of completely reinstalling windows just to fix a Spotify feature....
