Is it possible to tell spotify not to play any songs with explicit lyrics? I like to play random playlists or spotify's top lists sometimes but don't like songs with explicit lyrics.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jonathan
Solved! Go to Solution.
I just found my 10yo daughter listening to a song on her Amazon Echo full of explicit lyrics - f***ing, mo****f***ing etc.
Sorry everyone but I think it's pretty clear given how many and how long people have been asking for this. Despite it being probably a couple of days of developer's time to build, this is not a priority for Spotify because they basically don't care about protecting children.
I'm cancelling my subscription and switching to a service with parental controls as soon as I can find one that works.
I cancelled mine this week as promised. I have gone to Apple who respect our children’s ears and integrity!
OK thanks I will take a look at Apple Music. I think Apple have a generally good track record on social and corporate responsibility, whereas Spotify basically has no concept of ethics.
I agree.
I am going to have to move to another music service unless something can done with Explicit songs - either have playlists that don't include explicit songs or at least use the Radio edit versions.
This is vital1
these several explicit filter forums have the aim of steering spotify into installing a filter to allow choice in the type of music we listen to. A stop-gap measure from an entrepreneur advertising on this forum can only cloud the issue and give spotify leverage in delaying. You are perfectly welcome to market anything you want but please not on these forum pages

I cannot turn off explicit content. I have children in the house listening to songs containing the words **bleep** etc. This renders my account unusable. Can you please enable me to filter out filth or cancel my account and issue a refund please. The sale of goods act in the UK means that I'm entitled to a refund if the goods purchased are not fit for purpose. The purpose of these goods is to stream music in my house. I'm unable to do that due to the lack of a filter for filth, therefore I demand a refund should this facility not be provided. Membership name for refund is chrisx3 Thanks for your help and understanding. Chris

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble turning off the explicit content using the app. No worries, I can explain.

Spotify doesn’t censor music. We make it available in whatever form it’s given to us by artists and labels. They’ll often provide an “explicit” and “clean” version of an album. If both versions are available, you can find them under More Releases, located below the final track of the album page.

I'll make sure to pass this suggestion to the right folks here at Spotify so we can take actions of your concern.

You are shifting around answering the requirement to trade in the UK and refund due to the service not bring fit for purpose.

I'm sorry if you feel that I answer your question that way. I'm just following our standard procedure.

That's understandable Joel - and I understand that you as an individual are likely to be a fine person but I'm not happy with your company's stance on this. The service is not fit for purpose of we are not able to listen at home or work, or in the car with children present.
Joel P
at 8:39, Mar 11:
That's correct. There are songs that are not advisable for the kids to listen to. I'll make sure to pass this to our developers since they're the right folks with this concern.

Don't worry, as soon as we’ve got anything to announce we’ll let everyone know over on the Spotify Community at http://community.spotify.com/.

For the mean time if you want to keep your Premium subscription, I highly suggest creating a playlists for your kids so they won't have to listen to those explicit songs.

Please do pass this on to them. However, from looking at the Spotify community help pages it is evident that this has been requested for over 5 years which to me means that Spotify have no intention of doing the same as Amazon music or apple music or Pandora or Google music.... so I have to cancel my membership. Playlists are helpful but when they ask for a song using Amazon Echo they get the most popular one, ie a tirade of "**bleep**" etc. So I either disconnect these devices or switch to an alternative music service.

I see. Thanks for the info, Chris. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. Should I cancel your Premium subscription now? I will also refund your most recent payment.

Unfortunately that is the only way to protect my family from the abuse from Spotify - so yes that would be appreciated.
Joel P
at 8:47, Mar 11:
I understand. I'd really love to fix your concern right away, however, this is beyond my point and it's an app concern so I need to send this to our developers. I will also raise this concern to our upper management so we can do something about this on going concern.
Joel P
at 8:47, Mar 11:
Please give me 2-3 minutes to cancel and refund the payment on your account.

Joel, thanks for your help, understanding and patience. I really hope that I can come back to Spotify if this is sorted out.

It's my pleasure helping you, Chris. Thank you too for your cooperation.
this is hilarious - they are filtering out the swear words in my post but not in the music piped into my children's bedrooms.
Un ducking believable.
I understand the frustration of this feature not being available, looks like they will be making this feature anytime soon. However, after many years of myself wanting this feature for my store, I decided to make a Windows program to do the task of blocking explicit tracks. It also has many other features too.
You can download a 14 day free trial.
If you’re on iOs or a mobile device, you can still use this program to block explicit tracks remotely. But you’ll need a Windows machine somewhere in the house to do it.
I’ll be working on an Android app in mid 2018
Thank you
This is a necessity. Spotify has needed this feature forever - why has it not been implemented?
I have to find another music service provider. I use this app for work events and can't have explicit lyrics coming up at business functions.
Answer: As stated by a Spotify Representative,
"I've checked my resources here on my end and currently, it's not possible to filter these music."
Personally this is an important feature and there is no reason why Spotify should not have developed this feature.

I tis clearly not possibly because Spotify have not developed a tick box to add the feature.
The actual fact is that the functionality (ie the Exlicit tag on each file) is present. It would just be a couple of lines of code (ie less than a days work + testing) to implement this feature.
There has to be another reason that they would not implement it. My suggestions are money or ignorance or binding contracts.
So Apple Music seems to manage this, I guess Spotify’s coders just aren’t up to this complex challenge of flagging ‘explicit’ labels on their platform....
Go to Settings > General > Restrictions and then tap “Enable Restrictions.” This will prompt you to set a password to control these settings moving forward.
From here, you can block access to entire apps, but if you just want to take care of the music stuff in place, scroll down to the “Allowed Content” heading and tap on “Music & Podcasts.” On the next screen, you can just turn off the switch next to the Explicit tag, which will block anything bearing that on iTunes, Apple Music, or the Podcasts app.
If you want to turn it off later, just go back to the Restrictions page and tap on “Disable Restrictions.” It’ll prompt you to re-enter that password you set up, and then everything will be available again.
On your MacBook or desktop computer, you can do the same thing in iTunes under iTunes > Preferences > Parental."
Hard to believe it’s true but I just checked the settings in the iPhone app and they have finally implemented it!
Go to settings (the cog icon on top right corner of ‘Your Library’), then ‘Explicit content’. Toggle on or off.
Better late than never, thank you Spotify.
thanks spotify but when will you get around to the other 95+%
Finally! Only took about 5 years. Although it still doesn’t seem to be there on Android, only iPhone.
I found a way to disable explicit songs from playing but now I want to turn it off to listen to "This Is America" and I dont see the option lol. It is there for the android app but aint for the desktop app.
You can disable explicit songs now on apple and android devices. I am sure that the web apps will soon be added also.
Finally!
I found the switch on Andriod!
Thanks Spotify... I haven't seen the option on the Windows version, but I'm happy with this for now as most of the time, I'm using my Android phone.
