I noticed when I was creating a playlist today that I was able to add duplicate songs without the 'Duplicate Song' warning appearing if they appeared on different albums (for example, I was able to add the song 'Too Much' by Drake off of the 'Nothing Was The Same' album, and also able to add the same song off of the Deluxe version of the album without it being flagged as a duplicate).
Is there a way to prevent this (or at least display the 'DUPLICATE SONG' warning) so I don't accidently add duplicates to a playlist just because the duplicate song appeared on another version of the album? I understand this is an extremely petty thing to create a forum post over, but playlist OCD...
I'm using the desktop app for Windows 10.
Hi, I can also add the same song (same Remix) more than one Time. I have so many duplicates in my Playlists 😞
A Track and Artist Match can be not so difficult to implement, for the best streaming solution on the market. 😉
Same for the macOS and iOS clients. Spotify, come on, fix it please!

Currently the app identifies a song by both its name and the album it's part of. Because of this if a track appears on multiple albums it won't be recognized as a duplicate. It seems however that other users have also requested this to be changed and they've created this idea. You can add your support there by up-voting the idea. We'll inform on any developments there, if there are any. So make sure to subscribe if you haven't already.

The idea about the Liked Songs playlist is very similar to the issue you're experiencing. If it gathers enough votes the tech team will most definitely look i to the option to introduce a new way for detecting duplicates also with user created playlists.
You can also post a comment there with the suggestion to highlight similar songs. This way the right folks will also take this into account, as soon as the time for designing changes comes.

Humm... I actually want to do duplicates! I have some playlists on other Spotify-like app with duplicates. The way I make my playlists I group together songs with same flow, same melody or same story, ect. A song that I like a lot might fit different category-stage of my playlist so I consciously add it again. I get the some people just add a song and don't construct a playlist from beginning to end but it would be sad that this loophole is taken away if people like me are not heard about duplicates. I don't know how hard it is to put in your system but maybe put something in the settings giving us the choice to stop or agree to duplicates in playlists?

We're glad the current functionality is suitable to your needs. We always strive to set up the app in such a way, that's comfortable for different use-styles. As you're probably aware, currently when you try to add a duplicate song to a playlist, you get a pop-up message that asks for confirmation. We're sure that if the feature requested in this idea gets implemented, it won't be at the expense of existing features, so the development team will most definitely consider a way to keep duplicates. If you like the current pop-up system, you can also leave a comment there, so it's easier for the right folks and they have different opinions in the same place.

@Babyricki you miss the point of this thread. If you add duplicates intentionally that is fine and nobody wants this to be forbidden. However there are copies of identical songs (same version of the same song by same artist) that are not recognized by "the system" as being the same as another song that is already in the list. You can basically add duplicate songs to a playlist without getting the Spotify warning about duplicate songs, because the songs have a different ID - for example one ID for standard album, one for album with bonus tracks and one for the maxi/single
Can someone please fix that problem? Year 2022 , this problem still can be happened. I added a song three times in 2 years and no , they were not different version. Same song released at same year and at same album. Is that so hard to fix a bug. I tried in Chrome and Spotify windows version too. Both of them are broken STILL...
In fact, I found a case where two versions of the soundtrack were somewhat merged together. This caused a weird behavior in Playlist, because the original song-ids were as before, but when adding a song from version b to a playlist, it actually added playlist a. This was even more confusing than before. If two songs are merged, the resulting ID should basically be replaced in all playlists globally, which did not happen here. However it would still be open how to handle playlists which contain both original IDs (have the merged ID twice? remove the now-duplicate? - dependending on the semantics the user built the playlist for both variants could be wrong.)
I intentionally add repeats because I use this to teach group fitness/ballet that I choreograph to music and most songs I use twice, one for each side of the body. Before, I would add a song to the playlist and if it was already there it would give me a warning asking if I wanted to add it again. As Of today, I notice that when I add a song, it gives me a checkmark to indicate if it has been added or not, and no longer gives me the option to add twice. there is still the option to click the arrows in the corner to have the song play twice in a row (I think) but the problem is, that second play doesn't add to the time of the playlist. In other words, my 4 minute song contributes 4 minutes wheras before when it was added twice, it added 8 minutes to the total time on the playlist. I plan my class around the time that's listed, so I know when I've reached my time limit and stop adding more tracks. this change is a huge problem for me and I'm wondering if there's any way around it, or if I have to switch to a different music app altogether
Your post does not really relate to the original issue in this thread, in fact your issue is quite the opposite and what you can do is exploit the issue in this thread to workaround your issue, so find another version of the same song (different open.spotify-ID) and add it.
I think for your issue you better open a separate thread, however I can tell you that right now in the Windows App (and this subforum is about the Windows Desktop App) does still ask me whether I want to add the duplicate song a second time to a playlist, so either you have a newer version (mine is Spotify for Windows 1.2.6.863.ge7902f05) or you are relating to a different App (maybe mobile phone app?), which would mean that this is not the appropriate subforum.
