My Question or Issue

The music randomly stops playing on my desktop. However, it seems the desktop still thinks it's playing music because the pause button is displayed, not the play button, and the little music bars are going up and down. Refreshing the page doesn't work. Log out and back in again sometimes works after a few tries. I've logged out of everything and changed my password. I've also turned the computer off and then on again. Sometimes, if I wait long enough, the music will start back up randomly.

Nothing has helped keep the music playing consistently. The music will play for 15 minutes and then stop, or play for an hour and then stop. It's very random.  Any suggestions?

Hey there @jdejager83,

Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome.

We've received similar reports here. Have you noticed a similar behavior on your side? If yes, we'd suggest you check and try some of the suggestions there. Make sure to let us know in that thread the Spotify version you're running.

If the issue is not the same, we'd suggest you perform a clean reinstall of the app on the affected device, to make sure the stored cache is not leading to this behavior. If that doesn't do the trick, you can also try:

  • If you use a VPN, try switching it off. Keep in mind Spotify doesn't officially support VPN. This means that issues with the app while using VPN are expected behavior.
  • Clear the host files of your device.

If this issue should persists, we'd like to gather some additional info:

Hi everyone,

For the past week, I’ve been experiencing an odd issue on the Spotify desktop app. Songs will randomly stop playing after a few minutes, even though my internet connection is stable. It’s not pausing the track just freezes and won’t resume unless I skip to the next one or restart the app.

I’ve already tried reinstalling Spotify, logging out/in, and disabling hardware acceleration, but the issue still happens. Interestingly, I noticed it’s more frequent when I’m using my wireless headphones compared to wired ones.

While looking for solutions, I came across a thread discussing audio streaming quality settings and how they can sometimes cause playback interruptions if the bitrate is too high for certain connections. Since I often listen to relaxing playlists for mental wellness and focus, I’m curious if others who stream similar content have faced this too.
