No Internet Connection Detected (Error Code: 4)

No Internet Connection Detected (Error Code: 4)

Further to all the other threads on this, I was experiencing this problem and tried all the fixes suggested in those threads. The one that suggests changing the proxy seemed to work until I tried using Spotify again the next day. Then it was back to Error Code 4.

I de-installed, re-installed. Neither fixed it.

Then I was looking at the Proxy setting again and noticed there was a 'No Proxy' setting. It occured to me that as I am a home user, and not using a Proxy, then surely this must be the correct setting.

I tried it. And you know what? It worked! It's only been 45 minutes mind you. But as soon as it re-started it worked straight away, making connection back to Spotify. I'll keep and eye on it, but hopefully it's fixed.

So if none of the other suggested fixes works, maybe this one will.

And if this fix has been mentioned elsewhere, apologies, I must have missed it.

Spoke too soon ๐Ÿ˜ž

Left it alone for an hour, laptop had fallen asleep so started it back up. Error Code 4.

The battle continues......

After reading a few other threads on this it's often said that changing your DNS server to Google fixes the problem, which suggests that there's a problem with name resolution. As I didn't want to change the DNS server my ISP points me to, I thought I'd bypass DNS altogether and try putting an entry in my Hosts file to resolve the name locally.

So far it seems to be working. Booted my PC this morning and worked straight away. So will see how it goes.

If you want to try this fix, you'll need to edit the 'HOSTS' file in C:\Windows\Systems32\Drivers\etc. It's a system file so you may need administrator priviledge.

1. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator

2. Navigate to the above directory

3. For safety, make a copy of your hosts file

    copy hosts hosts.old

DOS Box 1.png

4. Enter the command 'notepad hosts'

5. Add a new line to the bottom of the file:

    104.199.240.211         play.spotify.com

(use a 'Tab' between 211 and play)

DOS Box 2.png

6. Save the file and exit

Hopefully that should help, see how you get on.

Final note - If Spotify change the IP address of play.spotify.com this will stop working. To find the new IP address, at a Comman Prompt enter 'ping play.spotify.com' and that will give you the new IP address. Just change the entry in your hosts file to match.

Good luck.
