Spotify automatically starts up when I turn my computer on. How do I stop that? I am using windows 7 os.
Solved! Go to Solution.
I finally got mine to stop opening on startup. A recent update must have fixed it or something, becuase I didn't do anything different. I had already removed it from the startup folder, unchecked to box in Spotify preferences to "open on startup," and removed it through msconfig. None of those things did the trick until very recently.
thought i'd check as well - when i opened the app (granted, i haven't opened spotify on my laptop in quite some time), spotify updated on its own (that's a new gripe, i suppose - we should be able to manage whether or not an app updates)....but i digress - this time, the options for not starting up on boot/login were there
i've disabled this and will check on the next reboot whether it actually works
new gripe #2 - even after you close spotify (with file -> exit), a spotify "web helper" process continues running
spotify: is there a way to turn off this web helper?
not workng for me; don't see any ability to update te app so it must be the latest version. big pain. can't stop it and you'd think with all the complaints and talk of switching to Pandora, this would be fixed by now. shame....
Thanks for this. I, too, was about to uninstall Spotify. This worked!
Your solution worked!! Thank You!!
What exactly worked? I have been dealing with this for half the year; nothing suggested so far has worked, short of uninstalling.
Is this still working for you? I will be shocked if so. About to uninstall for the fifth time; I reinstall only when I want to listen for the day and see if Spotify has stepped up to fix this issue.
@DialNM - If you are only using Spotify on occassion (and this isn't a fix really!) you might want to check out the web player 😉

OH THANK (not GOD) YOU!!!
Im annoyed that this had to be done in order to get spotify from autostart but Im so grateful!
You´re the MAN!
This WORKED! Thanks so much, it has been doing my head in for months, you have saved spotify on my computer by the skin of it's teeth. Very intrusive to have an app that takes over your start up...not good manners spotify. Thanks again for the magic solution 🙂
What makes spotify think they have the right to overwirite my services settings in windows.
I have found how to permanently fix this imposition.
I am going to delete spotify now !!!!
Goodbye forever.

What service[s] are you referring to? Other than a startup item for spotifywebhelper.exe, which is not a service and easily removed in preferences, I'm not aware of any services changes on install.
And as a whole, and you should know this if you monitor services frequently, it is not at all unusual for software installations to add services. Many are masked as svchost.exe and cannot be identified easily.
I just looked and I don't see anything that appears to be originating with Spoify.
For the sake of anyone else following this thread, the poster has confused services with processes.
Start > Run > services.msc
This shows all the services that are running or even not running. You will not find any Spotify services because they don't exist. Unless something has been changed, services.msc does not show startup items. That would be msconfig.exe
Regarding the rant regarding "an unambiguous 'run at startup'" first of all, thie IS an option to open automatically, which is set to ON be default. This is nothing unusual. iTunes does it, plenty of other software does it. But that is not what is causing what he is reporting.
Spotifywebhelper.exe is a process which opens at startup IF you have the "open from web" option enabled. If you uncheck the option, the process remains unless you kill it or restart your computer. Restarting Spotify without restarting your computer will NOT kill the process. With the option disables, after a restart, the process does not open at startup. Ever.
Generally speaking, if someone comes in here and starts ranting that the sky is falling, he's not gonna get much help. It makes much more sense to ask questions politely than to start pointing fingers, especially when you don't know what the **** you're talking about.

I ended up just uninstalling. I had it installed on my work computer which is nice but I can't have it popping up everytime the system reboots. Just too frustrating to try and figure out.
This was resolved for me by going to :
Spotify > Edit menu > Preferences
* Select "Don't open automatically"
* Un-check "Allow Spotify to be started from the Web"
With respect to Rollo and any devs that read this thread, you should expect that when an application's behavior deviates significantly from the standard expected from most other apps, people are going to get frustrated, and will express themselves accordingly.
Defaulting to run automatically at startup is archaic behavior to begin with. That's what malware typically does. Most respectable applications, with an exception you named but I won't, prompt you to decide to, or do not, automatically run at startup. I suggest you add a prompt during install to ask people to choose. This will alleviate a large amount of the negative feedback you are getting about this.
Beyond that, the "Allow Spotify to be started from the Web" is ambiguous to begin with. To me and probably a good number of users, that means if I open a "web" browser, and click on some link to run Spotify, or if I launch it from www.spotify.com, the application will launch automatically. To me, that feature does not imply that if I have any kind of Internet connection, Spotify will auto-run. I suggest you retag this option.
As a new user this behavior very nearly made me just uninstall the application after the first couple times I booted up my computer and it was running. I expect to have full control over what runs on my computer, and I don't like surprises. I urge you to adhere to the quality of your product, and make some changes in accordance with the feedback you are getting.
Regards,
Brian

Agreed. I'm running a Mac and it doesn't even come up with those options under preferences. I have logged out and if it appears again when i reboot, its getting uninstalled. I am too busy to have appllications that I use occasionally automatically opening up. "The customer is always right" - about time Spotify listens to them or loses them.
