I have a playlist with 10,000 songs and use shuffle to listen to them. What I realized the past weeks is that the same songs are played over and over again - and not because I listen to this playlist 24/7 but because the shuffle mode seems to not pick songs just randomly but has some kind of algorythm behind to pick certain songs all the time again and again. This is quiet annoying because the reason I use shuffle in a playlist with 10,000 is not to listen to the same songs all the time but to have variety!
Hi @Tom7777777,
Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community!
Unfortunately, in large playlists (over 150 songs), the shuffle option prioritizes the songs that Spotify perceives you enjoy the most; this is why you might notice that some songs are repeated while listening on shuffle.
However, there is currently a Live Idea to have an option for a “true” shuffle, which would play all the songs in a playlist in a random order, and once they’re all played, reshuffle them and play them again. If this is something you’re interested in, I’d recommend adding your +VOTE to this idea; the more votes an idea gets, the likelier it is that Spotify will implement it, and you can read more about how feedback on ideas reaches Spotify here.
It will also be useful for you to Subscribe to the idea by clicking the three dots next to its title; that way, you can be sure to be informed of any relevant updates.
Let me know if you have any other questions, and have a good day!
Hey I'm no developer/AI type person but seriously, if I shuffle play my playlist of 8,000 songs and just let them play, how can you possibly PERCIEVE what songs I like MOST??? I don't "Like" them, or repeat them, or play songs individually, so how can you possibly come to a conclusion about what SONGS I enjoy the most?? Sure I have 26 albums by The Fall on the playlist and you might reasonably conclude that I like The Fall, but how can you possibly PERCIEVE which songs I like the most out of all those? Even logging out and back in to generate a new shuffle list (like we had to do in the past) doesn't seem to sort it. By the way, just for information for your ridiculous algorithm or whatever about perceptions of what I like, no I DO NOT like Songbird by Fleetwood Mac that much. Just shuffle the effing songs.
I'm sorry, but I don't buy the "some devices can't handle playlists that are this big" excuse.
If the device can decode and play streaming audio, it can handle a random index of an array of several hundred thousand in a couple of milliseconds.
This is so annoying I'm willing to give Amazon Music another try.
I'm not sure if it would help anyone, but I sorted my larger playlists (800+ songs) by "Duration" and then just played them in the order they were sorted in to.
It's by no means what shuffle should be, but it "shuffled" them enough so that I don't have to listen to the same 40 songs.
I’m happy I’m not alone m this issue but it’s so frustrating this was brought up last year and it’s still a problem. I just realized this week that I have been listening to the same damned songs over and over and over again. Spotify - get with the program or my entire family will be leaving your platform. And we will not be recommending it to anyone. This is getting old.
IMHI... It's a $ thing NOT a technology thing. It would very easy (and likely IS being done) to incorporate parameters into the shuffle algorithm to identify, prioritize and present songs with lower royalty fees and play them most often. Notice there is no "reset" play count option that was widely available in iTunes over 15 years ago!
There are lots of other streaming music services out there now for the same price point. I'm sure others have solved this "technical" issue well beyond any 150 song limit.
FIX THIS AWFUL SHUFFLE SYSTEM!!!!
Winamp had an option to choose the behavior of the shuffle option.
I wish Winamp could be plugged to Spotify's data and we could manage everything from there.
what if they play us the same songs over and over again because spotify don't want us to listen to many songs they have to pay for
Spotify pays per stream not per song so it doesn't make a difference what songs they play they pay the same amount
you know what's up. they pay license fees each time a song plays so the ones you hear over and over again, they play the least fees for. super annoying and wish they would just be honest instead of garbage response like sOmE dEvIcEs CaNt HaNdLe...
I sometimes "randomize" the order of playlists by alphabetizing it by song Title. Then I play the list in order from A-Z (rather than shuffle). A weak solution, but better than nothing for now.
legit hack. thx
I did this yesterday and all these 'new' tracks are awesome! Annoying it's alphabetized though but beggars can't be choosers I suppose. They might not be so awesome but just because Spotify has mashed my brain on the same tracks I USED to love, now I hate - I suppose a monkey banging a pipe against a tin bucket even would sound good now.
You can kind of fix this by putting repeat on while shuffling, I’ve been doing this on my playlist with 3000 songs because it would only play a certain like 30 songs
Apparently Spotify is the biggest employer in Sweden, yet they cant fix this.> Obviously, someone who wants their songs in a playlist shuffled wants them shuffled. Why would Spotify try to 2nd guess what users "really" want and force them to hear the same songs over and over again. It really is annoying. And baffling?
But, the only reason why Spotify would believe we like a certain song a bit too much, is because it keeps playing the same songs. This happens with smaller, Spotify generated playlists too. This morning, it kept playing the same 5 songs in a playlist. 😐 We don't need machine learning on songs we have selected for a playlist.
I know it's not a proper fix for the shuffle feature not properly shuffling, but I just found a tool that will reorder your playlist. Search for "Spotify Playlist Randomizer", and look for the one from Steven Aleong. It'll shuffle the actual order of songs in your playlist, then you can just play it without shuffle enabled

My Question or Issue
When I play a song and do get the streaming to continue, another topic I opened, the same group of songs is played all the time. Should this not be more random? Again like with my last topic I have cleared the cache, uninstalled the app completely and reinstalled. At first it worked, then back to the norm. I think Tesla has more songs in their portfolio than Modern Day Cowboy, although excellent. I guarantee Ozzy has more songs than Crazy Train. Not sure what is going on but that seems like a function of the app that should be pretty routine and easy to do. Again I have started checking out other services that seem to operate as expected. I just want to pick a song and have the streaming continue randomly when that song is finished.
Any insight to this problem would be appreciated.
V/r,
Troy
This explanation is ridiculous. If I wanted to listen to 150 songs, then I'd have 150 songs in my playlist. If I have 500 songs in my playlist, its because THOSE ARE THE SONGS I WANT TO HEAR. If Spotify developers aren't smart enough to figure out how to do that, then they should --at the very least-- give me the ability to clear that cache and reload RANDOMLY.
Geez.
It has become so bad that I've heard songs repeated within 4-5 songs. This is unacceptable and spotify needs to fix it or else it's time to find something else
