Using latest spotify downloaded off of the website.

Spotify takes around 10 seconds, sometimes considerably longer, to respond to things like pausing or changing song. Navigating the menus also slows down when this happens. When this issue is present, I cannot control windows spotify via spotify browser. The CPU usage goes up considerably when the problem is occuring, from 0.6% when normal to around 30% when the problem is happening.

Hey there @Snali

Thanks for getting in touch about this and welcome to the Community!

First up, it's well worth running a clean reinstall of the app to get rid of any cached files that might be causing trouble. Make sure to re-download it from the Microsoft Store

If the issue persists, would you mind checking if the same happens while using a different internet connection?

Additionally, we'd like to know if this started happening after a specific event such as an update.

We'll be on the lookout.

Hiya Eni,

The microsoft store version seems to have the same issue.

The problem goes away when I switch to wifi and comes back when I'm using ethernet.

I'm not sure when exactly when it started happening, but it's not been more than a month.

Thanks for getting back so quick,

Snali

Hi @Snali,

Thanks for the reply. Have you encountered this behaviour on any other device or only on this PC? If you haven't tested on other devices, please do so. If possible, please also log in with a different account on the affected PC and see if the behaviour is the same. You can use the account of someone you know or make a new one yourself.

Keep us posted.

Hiya,

The problem is only on this PC, works fine on my phone. When I logged on with a different account it worked fine as well, but I didn't test it for long. As the problem isn't always present, it can make it hard to test! In any case, it hasn't been playing up as often in the last few days. I'll keep you updated!

Thanks,

Snali

Snali im getting the same issue! I reinstalled, did everything. Did you ever fix it?

I'm afraid not. It mostly stopped on its own. It still does it occasionally now for me, not often or long enough to be annoying, so I kind of forgot about it. I think it went away when I changed to wifi, but can't check as I'm ethernet only at the moment. Are you on ethernet too?

Hope you have more luck!

I am having this same exact issue! Somedays I get horrible +10 second lag for start/pause button, jumping to different parts in a song, and skipping. Saw this post and began testing how Spotify would respond to different internet connections and scenarios. Narrowed down that the issue only occurs when directly connected to ethernet. Occurs even for songs that are downloaded and when no other background processes are running. Not an issue with PC hardware. I have an i7 and 16gb ram. For internet I consistently get over 200MBps download speeds and 10MBps upload speeds. When I force Spotify to tunnel through my VPN the issue goes away, but when I turn my VPN off and revert back to just my ethernet the issue returns. Bizarre since the VPN's connection should be the same or worst than just raw ethernet from my router, right? If you have a decent VPN this could be a good temporary fix if you don't want to constantly unplug your ethernet.

I take back the statement on the VPN working. With more testing I found the issue was still present. When I completely disconnected my PC from internet the lag was resolved for downloaded songs. Night and day comparison with responsiveness for pausing, skipping, etc when internet was disconnected. Frustrating that even though the songs are downloaded I don't get any of the benefits when connected to internet. I read on other forums it's an issue with internet bandwidth. But I don't get it. Everything else like Youtube, gaming, streaming, etc is fine at my 200-300MBps download speeds so why the **bleep** is Spotify like this? I don't want to pay +$10/month on a music subscription where I have to unplug my ethernet cable ever single time I want to listen to music. I hope some of the devs see this and can fix the issue, or at the minimum actually let downloaded songs be played locally while on the internet.

I have the same issue with trying to play/pause/skip songs. It's often very laggy and seems like it's trying to tell a remote server what the action is and it is hanging up somewhere in the process. The commands all eventually complete, but sometimes it's up to a minute later. It's always intermittent, but happens several times a day. I have 1GB up & down so it isn't my internet connection.

My best guess is the system they use to allow you to listen across devices "seemlessly" is the culprit. Always needing to go to external servers just to play/pause is silly. The commands should be completed locally first and then tell the server what it did. If that isn't the issue then I'm stumped. 🤷🏻

Hey @mdahlke & @rkmacleod,

Could you take a look if the same issue would be observed when you log in with a different account?
You can create a free one for testing purposes. This way we'll know if the issue is account-related.

Aside from this though, as an alternative to unplugging your internet connection when listening while we try to resolve this, there might be a more convenient workaround -
Download your songs offline, click on the three dots in the top left corner and switch the app to Offline Mode instead:

Hope this eases up the situation a little bit for the time being 🙂

Switching to offline mode seems to work. I'll keep listening for the day to confirm, but when experiencing the issue and going to "offline mode" play/pause/switching songs is instant with no lag.

Hey @mdahlke,

Thanks for the additional info.

Did you have the chance to also test this with a different account? The user @Snali confirmed this worked for them so the behavior might be caused by some content saved in your accounts.

Let us know how it goes.

Hello and please allow me to add to this discussion for the moderators and support staff.  I've had this problem for over a year now and it's actually gotten steadily worse, no matter what device I'm using, OR internet connection.  I've moved 3 times and had 3 different providers since it started.  On my android it will completely freeze the app and there is only one way to fix it, reboot the entire phone.  On my pc, it will freeze and randomly crash while STILL playing the music (although this one hasn't happened in about a year).  I've messed with the settings, reinstalled windows, switched to a different phone, switched from ethernet to wifi, from wifi to 5g mobile, gone to public hotspots with excelent ping and high speed, and even had 1gig internet in my home with a ping of 10 and jitter of 2.  That should have fixed the issue, but did not.  None of these steps helped.  I've reinstalled my entire operating system to fix a few windows corruption issues in the last week.  I installed spotify before installing my standard programs, except for an anti virus.  I even uninstalled the antivirus and turned off defender to see if that helps.  Turning it to offline mode is THE ONLY fix.  Why that is I have not got a clue, but it has something to do with the button that turns on the new songs on the bottom right.  I usually refer to it as the "magic" button because it pulls up songs related to what I've been liking most lately, adding things I didn't know or didn't think to add.  When it was first introduced it worked flawlessly.  Now?  It doesn't do anything.  With that unticked, it does preform better, but not good.  The DJ works flawlessly (and I love it don't get rid of it).

I'm on windows 11 currently fully updated with all drivers updated.  Now to break down my hardware so you can really see it isn't on my end. 🙂

mobo - asus intel pro 4 z490

cpu - intel I7-10700k, no overclock with custom loop (temps never reach 70C so it's not my cpu)

ram - 128 gigs ddr 4 3200mhz G-skill Trident Z

sdd - dual samsung 980 pro 2 tb nvme gen 3

psu - 850 watt seasonic (still has 200 watts of headroom at max)

gpu - msi gaming x gtx 1080 8gb

My cpu never goes about 5% when I'm "only" listening to spotify even as it freezes, but my ram has spiked to 30 gigs used during those times, however it's extremely rare.

I uninstalled the app, rebooted, reinstalled, did not work.  I logged out, untinstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, logged in with a brand new account, after 5 minutes it did it again.  However it took liking songs to begin to slow the app down (which tells me that's part of the problem as a pc repair guy who's used to troubleshooting).   I started liking random songs, until I reached about 800 songs and the app after every reboot behaved the same way and began freezing, not responding to key strokes for nearly 30 seconds at a time.  I left the app open for an entire week without touching it or rebooting my system to see if it was something to do with a background process trying to catch up.  No, it didn't change a thing.  It worked great for all of 30 seconds.  Clicked next song, and it did the same thing across both accounts.

In offline mode the system doesn't freeze, it simply won't do what I tell it to half the time.  It takes over a minute to even load the app on my phone (samsung galaxy s21 ultra 5g on mint mobile).  It's not the internet, it's not my devices.  And we're not alone.  I've talked to a LOT of people who started having this problem about a year and a half ago.  The more songs they like, the more it freezes.  Offline mode fixes that EXCEPT for trying to load the app, or trying to get it out of offline mode, in which case sometimes the settings do not load at all, just loading a fully black screen.  I haven't bothered trying the browser because it entirely defeats the purpose of the app.  Which has me considering switching back to Tidal even for a higher price and less music, because at least their app works properly.  I LOVE spotify so do not take that as me bashing the company.  I've used it for a few years and would rather stick to it.  I'm giving it till new year 2025.  If it isn't fixed by then, I'm done waiting.  This needs to be passed up to the IT team, and if you need logs, next time it freezes which will likely be in about 30 minutes or less, I will gladly try to get those to you.

Windows 11, same issue. Significant song switching delay. The issue seems to be isolated to the windows and installer-based apps.

I have a decently powerful PC, so there's little reason for it. Even with a heavily modded Minecraft instance, several edge isntances, Discord, steam, and spotify all open at once, alongside several background drawer applications, I'm only at ~30% CPU and ~60% RAM.

This issue has persisted for over a year, consistently through moves and ISP swaps.

The issue does not occur in the browser, nor does it occur on any other device, even those on the same network, old or new. Both old and new phones function fully and snappily. The same can be said for the browser variant on any browser (firefox, chrome, edge, etc).

As aforementioned, the issue is only present and persistent on the Windows 11 installs.

EDIT: Any interaction is slow.

I am currently having the same issues. I just moved into my college dorm, so I suspect that it is that. Honestly, the best fix was just to run it in my browser because it works completely fine. It's been working all yesterday and today without any issues. I'm wondering if I can run the internet traffic of the spotify request through some sort of software that can track the requests, but I dont have time right now.

I'm happy to say that switching to Tidal fully resolved all my issues with Spotify.

Has anyone gotten an actual fix for this instead of going into offline mode?

Going into offline mode doesn't fix it either. It's temporary and will pop
back up again. So there is still not a fix. I wouldn't hold your breath for
one either.

I have the same issue. I have the Microsoft Surface Laptop studio, which is a very fast laptop, and I am connected to ethernet. Internet speed tests are saying I have a 700 mb download speed, 900 mb upload speed and 2 ms latency.
Opening the app, playing or pausing music, moving the bar under the play button to skip part of a song, opening the settings and many other things take 5-20 seconds to respond. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. This only happens on my laptop, not my phone. I have the latest version of Windows 11.

I tried:
- Reinstalling the app through the Microsoft app store
- Clearing the cache and downloads in the settings

- Disabling hardware acceleration in the settings

- Connecting to a high speed Wi-Fi instead of my ethernet

The only thing that has fixed the issue is going into offline mode, but it took me a couple minutes to do that because it wasn't responding. Of course, this is a bad solution, so I hope it gets fixed soon.
