Unlink volume control from desktop app and remote device

My Question or Issue

I recently bought new speakers and A/V receiver and decided to try the Spotify Connect thing. All was fine and dandy until I noticed that the volume slider in the desktop app was at about 10% - "Weird", I thought. "I always leave this at 100%. I'll just slide it back up". Suddenly, a terrible distorted sound came from my brand new speakers as the volume was cranked to the absolute maximum my little AV receiver could handle. Now I'm afraid that I may have permanently damaged my brand new speakers because of this "feature". 

Is it possible to unlink the volume slider from my AV receiver to control the device volume separately? This seems like a rather foolish design and I'm sure I won't be the last person who has this happen.
