This is exactly the problem. Music can be something that is quite intimate, and spotify has just killed the possibility for that by requiring that we not only engage in social media but share our feelings with all of our followers.

You're missing the point... The messaging functionality WITHIN the app allowed you to have access to your shared music across your devices... Again, every other app has direct messaging capability. Spotify isn't going to turn around their bottom line...
