Add support for Android TV

Android TV is Google's latest take on Android for the TV and is released with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The first device running Android TV is Google's own device Nexus Player.

The good thing with Android TV is that it runs regular Android apps with some modifications and it also has built in support for Google Cast.

Starting today, you’ll find Spotify on Android TV devices including Sony’s BRAVIA, NVIDIA SHIELD, Philips and the Bbox Miami by Bouygues Telecom. Click here for a complete list of all devices that support Android TV.

I have considered buying Premium Family - but I'll at least wait until I can actually use Spotify on the devices I have. And I can't be that hard to simply port the application into the Android tv-platform when Spotify already developed for smartphones and tablets. It's simply a larger screen and another input method. There's plenty of apps for the new platform already and the UI is pretty clear and contextual, so no reason to rack your brains any futher.

Even a simple Spotify Connect app would do the trick

But will that do video to?

Hi,

but there is a planned release date of Spotify for Android TV?

Since there are now so many devices coming to market built on Android TV, and in the all important place in your home you actually want to be able play your music, releasing the Spotify app asap is a must. This is a killer app for the living room. It is a killer defensive play against Apple music. It is now even more meaningful now that Google has released Chromecast Audio allowing users to hook up, and later network, their existing audio equipment. Please don't take 2 years to get this done as you did with Chromecast support.

Didn't see the "not right now" response on the third page. Like others who responded this is ridiculously disappointing. Need to seriously investigate alternatives, even though I've been using Spotify Premium for years. I cannot understand the reluctance to pursue the porting of an app to a device that lives in the living room. Apple TV and Airplay and the misguided support for all things Apple by Spotify is not being rewarded by Apple or their fan boys. Instead Apple has copied Spotify's biz model, approach, UI/app, and aims to take all your business. Surely focusing on the living room in any home will be strategically beneficial?

It will be interresting to see if Google Cast Receiver is updated with Spotify Connect support. The original ChromeCast gets SC support in a firmware update very soon. The new ChromeCast already has it.

So now we know what will happen, cf. Chromecast.

For more than a year, Spotify will not communicate on this.

And then ... TADA ... we have Spotify for Android TV.

This is still contempt of users.

Hi,
I released an Android TV app in Feb this year called "TV Player For Spotify".
This is an open source app (https://github.com/sregg/spotify-tv), not monetized in any way.
As far of today I have 10.000 downloads and Spotify even showcased the app in their official Developer Showcase: https://developer.spotify.com/showcase/item/tv-player-spotify/)
I'm reaching out to you because last month, Google suspend my app after I tried to change the logo.
I tried to appeal to Goggle, but they're saying that I have to publish a new app with a new package name. I can't even just update the app and revert the logo.
This new app will be really bad for the 10k users who are using the current one every day and will not get updates.
The only resort I have is to provide Google a consent from Spotify to use this logo. With that consent, I will be able to update the app and revert back the logo.
Please help!
Thanks.

I tried that app, and that you VERY much for making it. It was a (IMO) very well executed Android TV app, although it did have a few shortcomings.

I've since moved to GPAA, but why Google would want to limit the selection of quality apps for Android TV (and I honestly think this was the only good spotify client of the lot) I cannot understand.
