[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

This would be sooooo helpful! Please do this, Spotify!

nohbusa

The "censorship" argument is bogus. If I don't want to hear something that is my perogative. Spotify is essentially censoring my desire not to hear something!

I would be just as annoyed if I slected the "classical" radio station and every now and then a heavy metal song played. Imagine this same scenario at a funeral home memorial service... It would be simply unacceptable to have heavy metal start playing while grandma is trying to mourn. Of course we aren't "censoring" heavy metal, we just don't want it to play when the time is not right - thats why we selected the "classical" genre to begin with!

The same goes for the explicit button. There are many occasions where explicitives simply do not serve to support the musical atmosphere one is trying to create. This can be said for any type of music. Honestly, it would be amazing if there were buttons for "no vocals", or "no bag pipes", etc. Adding ways to tailor one's listening experience to his or her own preferences is not censorship, its good service! And it starts with this basic button to filter out songs you already have a database entry for!

Seriously... stop messing around and get this done!

(Yes, I am a paying customer.)

I totally agree with "nohbusa"!  I don't know if this is being considered a "censorship" issue, but certainly that idea holds no water.  Currently I still use Spotify and love the service, but I have made my "safe" playlists and usually just stick to that.  I do "explore" a little as I want to broaden my musical horizon, but I don't want to be assaulted by trashy language so I try to venture out only as I can keep an eye on the upcoming songs and avoid those tagged explicit.

It really does feel like our comments are falling on deaf ears though...

@SpotifyCares I just renewed my Pandora subscription since Spotify won't filter explicit lyrics. #NSFW #explicitlyrics #spotifydoesntcare

To the thousands who have given kudos on this thread and posted comments over the last 3+ YEARS - vote with your pocketbook and make sure Spotify knows you're doing that.  Until they realize that there's a financial impact to their HORRENDOUS customer service, why would they bother to listen?  (Most companies would argue that good customer service has a positive impact on their bottom line, but maybe we can get them to notice the negative impact.  It's not just losing potential customers, but existing customers and those who planned to make a purchase and then decided better.)

What is so artistic about F, B and N all over the songs all the time? Is there another service that I can subscribe to with a Explicit filtering?
StrikerFlux

Personally, I find it very offensive that Spotify does not have this feature... offensive enough that I'm onsidering stopping my premium subscription until Spotify does something about it. This is not the type of thing that you place "under consideration." This is just common sense.

To make it all worse, the mobile apps do not even show whether a song is explicit or not! Seriously?

Yeewee
I am actually looking for an alternative and once I find it, I will let you know.

If all fail, will just stick to conventional radio and just cancel the subscription anyway.

How is this even something that is in debate?  Put the option in there and if you want to have no curse words, you check it.  If you don't care and want everything, you don't.  It's simple.  Give the choice to your paying users.  There are a million scenarios where you can't play curse words; work, around kids, parties, schools, etc etc.  I'm actually utterly surprised this option is not in here.  It's enough to make me want to switch over to Pandora.

Would love to be able to disable explicit content on Spotify, i use this app a lot at work and in the car but usually can only play certain songs or playlists, the only reason I still use Pandora is because I am able to turn off explicit content.

GingerBreadMan

Yes this is a big deal for me as well, I'm thinking about replacing my sirius radio and pandora with spotify.  But this can not be an option if I can not control the explicit language I play in my car or at home.  If I tune into a local radio station I can choose a channel that I'm sure will be tasteful I should have this same choice.  I understand you don't censor music but this is a needed feature and even a deal breaker for me If I can't find a work around.
