[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I have stopped using Spotify over this issue, but that doesn't mean I'm done beating up on them. I've taken to replying to their tweets encourging other users to give an idea kudos to get their devs to work on it with the following message,

How many kudos does it take? Over 2,500 kudos and 3 yrs waiting for bit.ly/1Jb6bWL . #spotifynsfw

I encourage everyone involved with this thread to send a tweet to @SpotifyCares using the #spotifynsfw hashtag. If we can get more traction in public view it will hopefully get them to implement this very easy option. The tracks are already flagged explicit. The programming is

if (explicit && explicitFilter) { skip to next song! }

Spotify, if you'd like me to do this for you simply send me the relevant section of code and I'll write the darn functionality myself for FREE!

I'm guessing Apple's soon-to-be-released service will probably have this feature. If it does, I'll probably switch. As others have said, it's bizarre (putting it nicely) that this isn't done. How many minor changes to the clients have occurred that seem to provide functionality, take it away, provide it again - and this simple feature isn't included.

agreed. when apple launches their new service with this feature, I will switch all my accounts immediately.

Anyone got a link to the details of Apple's service? And will it be available in the UK?

There is no official information on the new service. As of now Beats is the only Apple-ish option (they own Beats), but the rumor mills are churning for a new service this summer sometime.

New to Spotify and I'm enjoying it, but not having this feature is deal-breaker.

I've been testing Google Play Music, which does have an explicit filter, and also seems to integrate into our home Sonos set-up well too.

At the rate Spotify is resolving this issue for customers it looks like I'll be taking my subscription over to Google.

Sorry Spotify - this is an important feature that your service is missing - for this here family it *is* a deal-breaker!!

Thanks - will have to give it a try!
