[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

I think they are under the false impression that customer loyalty is to the service and not the artists/music. They are about to find out.

I don't even have to pay for this option at Pandora!

Spotify has been running in the red (no profit) for quite some time now. The reason for them delaying this option is because of the potential for lost $. The last thing they need are more artists to leave (a la Taylor Swift) and take their music elsewhere. Those artists that produce a lot of explicit music will get impacted by this filter directly and probably piss them off. That's the last thing Spotify needs in light of Apple Music launching just around the corner. It sucks for the consumers but I'm sure the artists are all for it as it means more $ for them. Either way, I'm halfway out the door. Just waiting for Apple music to launch their new service. I'm hoping Apple cares just as much about their consumers as their artists. Let's see if I'm right......

If this is a revenue based decsion then the folks at Spotify clearly got their business training from an infomercial. If they really believe that people aren't skipping explicit songs they're completely cluless. The artists with the explicit tracks aren't going to see any change because their songs are already being manually skipped and as such would see no payment anyway. If they were at all forward thinking then they would replace the explicit tracks with edited tracks so that they have a chance of still getting a listen. There's just no real excuse for this. At least when Beats wasn't providing it you could point to the fact that Dr. Dre probably didn't want all of his music being skipped when he was the owner of the company. Are there any foul mouthed artists that have significant investment in Spotify? Maybe we need to be following the money trail.

I am honestly surprised that this has yet to be a feature within Spotify. I love Spotify, but find that I am unable to enjoy it at work or at family get togethers as there is no filter for explict content.

I'm a health professional who loves using spotify. You've converted me from other sources of music and I started streaming your music in my office to share with the rest of the staff and my patients.

However, In the middle of working on my patients I often find myself or my office manager stopping in the middle of of our procedures to run and skip a song that just dropped the F bomb.  We don't normally play songs that would have explicit language, we tend to just pick a "mood" for the day and let it go and somehow inappropriate songs would sneak into the preset play list.

We can start our own playlist but that would be extremely ineffiencient and silly of me to pay my staff in a busy office to form and periodically recycle playlists...

I'm sure I'm speaking for many small business owners who enjoy good music.

Thanks,

Dr. T

This feature has been requested for year!  Why will you not add a simple button to filter explicit lyrics  When Spotify adds a track to a playlist that had not had an explicit song and now does, it can be very annoying having it show up at parties, family gatherings, and in the car with kids.

We are not asking you to filter the album, just the tracks.  Pandora has had this for years!

"Thanks again for all your feedback and contributions. We always want your thoughts on Spotify, even if we don't give a flying f**k about them."

Hey look, I filtered the explicit words from my post. That wasn't hard now was it?!

Can someone please start a petition requesting this feature or all the signators will cancel their subscription.

"2014-05-23 As it's been a while since we last posted..." -

Yeah, it's been more than a year since they last acknowledged this request...

I'm assuming there's a revenue/contractual reason with the record labels that has prevented spotify from implementing this highly requested feature (even while they continue to update the app with unrequested features.)

Pathetic.
