[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

cancelled all my Spotify accounts today for my family. (4 total) Signed up for Apple Music which supports up to 6 family members (which Spotify has yet to release in Canada after 9+ months) and has EXPLICIT support included! We're now happily listen to music for much much cheaper and I don't have to worry about my kids listenning to anything inappropriate.

Shame Spotify, Shame.  I enjoy spotify, but it is increasing getting annoying without this feature.

Take the 'Top 100 tracks' playlist on spotify.  16 of them are marked as Explicit..   and some of these songs are not just the odd swear word, but full on 18+ subject matter

The good thing is that Apple are offering 3 months trial... so you have 3 months Spotify to add this 'Under consideration' for 2 years!

Also, there is no way to sort playlist by the flag, so you can't even load playlist, sort, remove them.

Sort it out Spotify..

Well, It looks like Apple Music allows the filtering (and thereby allowing) explicit songs. Individual plans are the same price ($10) as Spotify and family plans allow 2 addtional users (6 vs 4) and they cost the same $15.

So far I havent been able to find any music that I want that isnt on Apple Music. Oh, just in case you are wondering. Yes, Taylor Swif't's album "1989" is included in Apple Music

Letter to spotify (That they will never read)

Spotify, you had over three years to implement a basic feature, if you would have listened to your customers. Then I would have stayed loyal to your service. Instead I am moving over to Apple music, you can expect a lot of iOS users leave. Additionally, Android will get apple music this fall, so there will be another mass leaving your service then.

Spotify, you had a good run.

....otherwise, I enjoyed Spotify (and my Gramofon!). they had every opportunity to fix this.

sadly, all three accounts canceled.

on to Apple Music.

Great idea!!  Just have a button/filter that changes the playlist that you've already created into radio versions of the songs when available and skip the explicit versions that don't have a radio version.  No other service offers this that I've seen and I bet more people want a feature like this but haven't even thought about it.  With more and more streaming services surfacing, it's features like this that separate services.  Now who at Spotify do I have to buy a beer to get this going??

To all of you who have been following this and hoping in vain for a solution, I have in fact confirmed that Apple Music does allow the explicit filter in iOS and iTunes to govern explicit content. The Apple Music interface leaves a little to be desired but in the end I can still get to the music I want and can keep my kids out of the bad stuff. Sayonara Spotify. You can't say we didn't warn you and you certainly had plenty of time to get this in place.

@MikeTapia - buy yourself that beer. You're wasting your breath on this one.

I reached out to twitter @SpotifyCares and got the same B.S. response which went something like this, "We will pass this on the the right teams to improve the app" which should be translated as "We dont care at all, here is some lip service that means nothing"

I gave them a shot at getting this done, Waited for years, they do not listen to their customers. Apple maybe a big company, but they are driven by money and know that keeping customers happy is importiant.

I am deleting my Spotify app, uninstalling it from my computer and switching over the Apple Music. I suggest you all do the same and let Spotify know that you are doing it on twitter and facebook.

Yeewee
It's done.

I just switched.

So I canceled Spotify. Switched to Rhapsody because I read (iin a post which I now realize was old) that it was possible to have a filter for parents/explicit. LOVED the interface and simplicity without all the bells and whistles. great selection. Plus as a T-Mobile customer it was only $5.99/month for a family account! But when I asked customer support about explicit filter they said they don'y have it. Canceled that. SO I tried apple today. I have an Apple/Mac/ios setup in my life, and have for over 10 years and the old Mac 9.2. That said, I have not been happy with Mac/Apple software development opver thepast two years. They have really dropped the ball with iTunes, iMovie, Photos, etc...Anyway I tried Apple Music and it will be good enough. They fixed the artist/album view in iTunes and the streaming from the cloud....actually...uhm..works now. And I can set up my kid's ipod/ipad with her own restricted account. Sucks about losing my playlists in Spotify but really, they were out of control and messed up anyway because Spotify file/orgainzing structure of music is just not for me. I'm old school. I listen to albums and have multiple albums by a lot of artists. So Apple music will cost me more but will add some simplicity to my life. Good luck gang.

I've canceled my Spotify Premium account and set up a family plan with Apple Music.  I tested out filtering explicit songs by using the Restrictions settings on my son's iPad and it worked well - explicit tracks no longer showed up in his view of the Apple Music catalog.

Apple Music was a bit confusing to use at first (Spotify was for me as well, though), but after a couple hours of playing with it I have to say I like it.  Their playlists are not as deep, but I'm sure that will improve over time.  I used Siri to call up a random album from the Apple catalog this morning while driving to work and was pretty impressed by how well it worked.  I see that as another plus and key feature for iOS users.

See ya Spotify.
