[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

darn, I came to Spotify from Rhapsody after 3 years of asking them for an explicit/clean mode.  WTF!  The search continues for a digital music solution that works for parents.

Hey, the good news is my kids will be be ready to handle explicit lyrics by the time any of our good ideas get implemented!

Google Play Music and Pandora both have an explicit filter. I subscribe to both.

This is insanely embarrassing Spotify!   I have been waiting and waiting for this option!  Yet, update after update comes and goes and still no option to block explicit content is there however, there are numerous new bugs, stupid new features that are redundant and that are beginning to clog the interface!  It is extremely obvious at this point where your priorities lie... and it is apparently not with consumer interests.  PANDORA has had this feature from DAY ONE!  The tracks are already labeled as explicit in your library if your programming idiots cannot add a tag in there to skip the song if the explicit label exits on the track then I really really question the abilities of you staff and why in the F&%# I am paying you $10 bucks a month to repeatedly ignore our requests and input.  This feature is quite obviously needed as a simple Google search will provide near endless results on this topic!  GET WITH IT ALREADY!

I think it's funny that they don't want to stop the free expression of ideas by censoring artists, but they are okay with censoring posts in this forum where we are also participating in the free expression of ideas. BTW a child is much more likely to click on an explicit song in spotify than to find a post on this forum so I think their priorities are misaligned.

As far as I am concerned my right to choose supercedes anyone's expressive rights if I have to PAY to participate in the situation.

I think the artists have to release a clean version of their explicit songs, that spotify can do this..

As an update, I did send them a very polite, but to-the-point email about this referencing the sentiment of those on this forum and got a response that at least acknowledges they are seeing more activity on this request.  I pasted that below.  Keep emailing and putting pressure on and perhaps something will get done.

In the mean time, I'm waiting to be a spotify customer:)

"Thank you for getting back with us.

We appreciate your proactive approach on how we can make Spotify better.

Having an option to filter songs, especially if there are explicit lyrics, has been getting more demand among users as we've seen in community

We're continuously working on this matter and we would encourage you to please continue participating in the forums.

We'll keep you updated on changes. You can also go to out Spotify blog for announcements.

Please feel free to get in touch if you need anything and we'll gladly be of help."

jonasschmid7...  This is not really part of our concern on this topic.  If the artist chooses not to release a clean version to Spotify then they will not be heard by the people who do not wish to head their explicit content.  I can't imagine that anyone wanting this feature would be demanding that a clean version be made of every explicit track.  The root of the issue is that we simply just don't want content with explicit content to play when the option is enabled... period.

As a side note that I just don't get...  This thread is SO active, with posts daily and almost hourly sometimes.  WTF is going on in the Spotify office that they don't see this?  SMH

I emailed the office. The response I got was as follows. He uses the word "safe button" which I haven't used and not heard anyone on here use, so maybe they are working on it and calling it that internally. However that could just be very wishful thinking. Hi there, Thanks for reaching out to us. We understand you're writing to us about the contents in our catalog. We'll be glad to explain this for you. As you have observed, Spotify does not censor music; we make it available in whatever form it’s given to us by the artists or labels. Often, they provide both an “explicit” and a “clean” version of an album. To find all versions of an album: Open the Spotify app on your computer. Search for and open an album page. If other versions are available, More Releases will show below the final track. But thanks for your feedback. We’ll be sure to pass your suggestion onto the right folks here at Spotify. We're always looking to improve Spotify in any way we can. We can’t say now if or when any specific release will be out regarding a safe button, but as soon as we've got something to announce, we'll let everyone know on the Spotify blog. For now, if you'd like to protect your children from "explicit" contents, we'd suggest creating a playlist of your favorite "clean" tracks which you can play while they're around. Hope this helps and clears things up for you. Don't hesitate to get back to us if you have further questions. All the best, Dominic
