[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

@gmartin. I applaud your attempt. It's people like you who keep me
checking back on this topic. For the past year, I have emailed spotify,
tweeted them, left feedback on their app. Emailed their corporate office.
All I got back is that Spotify does not want to censor artists and they are
committed to that ideal.
I got on Apple Music when it first came out and after the 3 month free
trail, cancelled Spotify and put my money with Apple Music. Google Music
is a great alternative too, but Apple Music works better for me with the
iphone.
I wish you luck in your endeavor, but Spotify wore out my patience months
ago.
If Spotify does a complete reversal and starts giving us parents the tools
we need, I will reconsider. They are after all the best streaming music
application. However, they obviously think they are too big and successful
to consider the needs of some regular folks who just want 1 toggle switch.

Child protection is the only issue here so I will be refering this case to the relevant authorities here (Australia). Many of us regard luring and exposing very young children to deliberate early sexualisation as a crime.

Yes, please add a global filter for explicit material.  I wont play a Spotify crteated playlist in the family room for that reason.

andymohlman

Come on Spotify, not implementing this feature is pure laziness on your part.  Explicit tracks are already tagged so please add a filtering mechanism for parents who would like to introduce their children to a variety of music styles without having to manually cover ears everytime the F drops.

For users with android there is now youtube red that also offers playmusic. I'm sure google won't sit on an issue for years without doing anything about it like spotify has done with this issue.

I agree it's no fun playing playlists at home with young children around! Spotify please sort this out it will be very welcome.

SMH.  Over 4,000 kudos on this and years of people asking...

After years on Spotify, I'm trying out Apple Music.  What's the holdup???  We're not looking to stifle anyone's creativity, we just don't want to hear the explicit! I wouldn't buy the stuff in the first place.  Let those who want explicit have it - and let those of us who don't want it turn it off!  PLEASE!

Just catching up with the storied history on this request.  I had tweeted SpotifyCares earlier this week -- and they are the ones that pointed me to this exact thread with the encouragement to add my support.  So they obviously know this request exists.  And I must say they were very kind and responsive to my tweets.  Which is why it perplexes me that they aren't doing more to respond to a request that is over four years old with so much commuty support.

My kids (16, 14, 11) all love Spotify and have asked me to get them Premium accounts.  I would be absolutely sold if there was an easy way for them to turn off Explicit songs.  For my family, it wouldn't even need to be an "enforced" (e.g., password-protected) setting, because my kids want the protection as much as we as parents do (I recognize that I don't speak for everyone here, though).  I only say that to say, any argument from a perspective of "censorship" is completely moot for me.

In my mind, it seems like Spotify is trying to make a statement by ignoring this request.  If that is in fact the case, then we as their customer base needs to make sure that this statement is heard.

(Now, since I am late to the party, I feel like I should wait a few weeks before doing anything rash.  But given the comments in this thread, I am not holding out much hope.  If Spotify is indeed monitoring this thread (as they should be, since it's the #3 most requested and #1 most commented feature in their community), maybe they can post and reassure us that this idea IS being considered and/or implemented.)

Having said that, I would be willing to begin taking action if they don't reply soon, and I would encourage everyone else to do the same. For instance, everyone here can call their local news "action" line.  News stations are always looking for human interest stories.  A story about how a huge international website (#131 in the US, #270 in the whole world) is deliberately targetting children with explicit music and sexual themes with no way for these to be even voluntarily turned off -- that's the kind of story that could lead on the 6 o'clock news.  A few dozen news stories may create enough buzz to prompt cancelations on the scale that would finally get their attention.

-- UPDATE --

Waited two weeks.  No response.  Canceled Spotify.  Set up Apple Music for the whole family.  Cheaper and includes option to omit explicit music.  LOVE IT!   Good luck Spotify, on your gameplan to NOT provide such a simple solution to the 3rd most requested feature on your entire community.  Apple Music may have copied you, but at least they know how to take care of their customers.  Bye!

That's a solid idea and one I can definitely get behind. I think that even
beats my letter-writing campaign idea.

Much appreciated suggestion. You have my kudos, sir/madam.

There is a childrens eSafety commissioner hotline available through all government agencies throughout the world. I have submitted a report and I would encourage other concerned parents, educators, and everbody to do the same. It does no good to ask spotify to act and any response from them so far just adds insult to injury.  Because of their "non censorship" policy we are free to organize on this forum and combine strategy to get some action. Lets not let them get away with it. Paper letters will probably meet with the same contempt as electronic messages ("Roboresponse") but a call to the local news service is an admirable suggestion! - but why not take it nationwide - in all nations!! == lets have some more ideas this is child protection we are talking, a no brainer in the right and wrong department
