[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

THIS IS A NEED!!!

This would be great for playing music when kids are around or at parties! Good idea!

Johncats, this is really frustrating, I'm trying to say exactly what YOU are saying. I don't want kids to be exposed. Here is what I will try to re-explain:
1. I didn't discover spotify until a few months ago. Spotify is a relatively safe place, if you know what to watch for.

2. When I was in my first year MIDDLE-SCHOOL, the STUDENTS, whom I had never heard swearing from before, were suddenly using every form of explicitive known to man.

3. Upon hearing the explicitives, I almost immediately understood what they meant. Even though I had little to no exposure before that time. Kids know (for the most part) what explicitives mean.

4. What I am trying to say, is that ALTHOUGH media, fellow students, and even parents use explicitives in front of children, we SHOULD NOT increase the amount of exposure they receive. Rather we need to show them that it is not acceptable language.

5. I am trying to PROMOTE the ADDITION of a "Skip Explicit Songs" or a "Turn Off Explicit Songs" button. Please don't think otherwise, that just makes me feel bad for you not understanding me.

6. I'm still in high-school, and I know grown-ups (or at least the good ones) want their kids safe. My mom and step-dad are the perfect example, because they teach me valuable life lessons.

This is the most important, and if for some reason you decide to only read one thing on this list it should be this:
7. The person who thought that this would have been a bad idea was Forced2register. He was the one one who said, "**bleep** nah stop sheltering your kids. You cant hide the little ones from this type of stuff they are going to hear it anyways. Just teach them to understand it." Except for the "you can't hide the little ones" part (after all, you probably aren't right next to them all the time), THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I THINK!!!

Johncats, please believe me, I don't want any kids exposed to any explicitives, and if I were a parent, I would rather risk homeschooling, than let them go to a public school where no-one cares what you say anymore. And also because of common-core. CC is just a horrible, corrupting form of "education".

I play my music at work but am only allowed to play songs appropriate for any young ears that may be listening. This control would be a very helpful!

Spotify allows you to censor jazz, pop, classic or whatever music gender by allowing you to prefer a music gender that fits to you. If Spotify wouldn't censor anything it would force you to listen what ever music despite your prefers. So they allows you to cencor allready, but they doesn't allow you to choose a music gender that is safe for kids. Daniel Ek claims to be a parent in his twitter acount but doesn't seems to act as one.

This feed will be so epic when Spotify finally gets the point and allows the subscribers (=payers) to listen music that they like. Currently Spotify with it's unfiltered playlists is as a traditional CD provider. Get it "as it is" - you are not allowed to adjust the content according you prefers. Is this really that the capability of digitalization that Spotify can bring to us as a paying customers?

As it's only a small minority that reads this "internal" feed of Spotify "discussion forum" I'm concidering to open a Facebook voting page or something similar that opens the real attitude of Spotify to protect kids to wider public. Who woud be ready to pass on the message through Facebook and Twitter?

Then again - why would I bother to help Spotify to offer a better customer experience as they have already ingored more that 5k user oppionions during few last years. They have been quite successful though - to keep this discussion  "hidden" in this forum where only a small part of customers find their way.

Spotify, did you do anything about this. This discussion started in 2012!!! It is just horrible that you don't have an explicit off/on option. My kids are listening to your music as well. I never realised some of the 'innocent' songs were not so innocent, only on Spotify I heard the explicit versions. Do something, can't be that hard to put a button to give this option!!!

They should at least label songs as being "clean", "mild profanity", and
"explicit". Mild profanity being the A, S, D, etc words.

Good luck all, I'm officially off to Apple 😞

Robbo75 -  After years of reading this discussion I've realized this is the only solution.  Spotify does not care about this issue and has proven so over the years.  I've moved on to Apple since they started offering Apple Music.  Spotify will not change, but we can!  Go to Apple Music, go to Google Music or any of the other services! Spend your money on a service who gives you what you pay for! Don't spend a dime on Spotify until they provide the service you want.
