[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Amazon appears to be unveiling a premium music service with a family pass coming soon, I believe them to be a company that listens to consumers quite well. I'll be deleting my free Spotify account that was never converted to premium for this sole reason and absolutely no other.

I had the same options when I cancelled, but emailed support to tell them why. Not that they are interested! Apple Music now👍

This thread started in 2012 and I am glad to see spotify is on top of this...In all seriousness, it is evident to me that either they are not reading the idea board or they don't want to add this feature.  They already flag the music as explicit so it wouldn't be that difficult to filter those songs.

In any case, my subscription is now cancelled.  I'll consider other options and if Spotify can find an innovative programmer or someone at the top that is willing to push this idea to the product, I may return.  For now, I'm out.

I agree with the last comment that Spotify either don't read the ideas pages or just don't want to act on them irresepctive of the kudos an idea gets. This thread has been around for 4 years and if you look through the various ideas that have been posted, there are many variations of this theme; "how can I censor explicit lyrics", "how can i filter explicit lyrics" , "how do I find the clean version of a song" etc.. etc.. The response in other posts is "Spotify want to provide music in the way it is provided to us by the artist or distributor" or words to that effect. I think that tells you all you need to know. Spotify's business model relies on artists making their music available in return for payments based on number of plays. In comparison to other social network services, Spotify has a small user base ... so there is little incentive for artists to make their music available to them. If Spotify start censoring or insisting on clean versions, it will further weaken their ability to negotiate. Basically, the artists and distributors have got them on the ropes. The move to increase the number of accounts allowed on a premium family membership is designed to try and dramatically increase their userbase... and thus improve their bargaining power. Companies like Apple and Amazon have a much greater market influence due to their more diverse service portfolio. I suspect that eventually Spotify will get swallowed by a bigger fish. Either that or it will end up as the music streaming equivalent of bebo.

If this is such an old request (2012) why has it not been incorporated yet?! 4 years? Really?!

Come on Spotify it can't be that hard! You already flag songs as explicit is the playlists so you already KNOW which songs contain inappropriate lyrics. I have the Premium Family package which is very much enjoyed by us all EXCEPT the all too often bad language used. Surely you can make a button to automatically recognise these flagged (explicit) songs and skip them!!

Mangleman

With respect ... this issue has been brought to your attention for over 4 years. Why are to slow walking this? Whether we've young minds listening or feel personally assulted by such language it needs a filter! It apparently is not a priority to Spotify.

WonderDad

I finally had to give in and switch. But not Apple, to Amazon. If I'm going to get explicit lyrics at least I'm going to pay less for them.

WeirdMunky

Sort it out Spotify, the whole point is about flexibility, why not s this so hard and not a high priority update?
