[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Why is this still listed as solved, when I have just voted on it being a good idea?

It is not solved. It remains an irritant policy Spotify bosses peddle from their fake libertarian, no censorship, moral high ground. I.m.o. anybody who actually likes listening to expletive-ridden, mysogynistic, music and sees fit to impose it on others, isn't fit to run a business. People, this is NOT about freedom of expression or about censorship. This is about Spotify free users being "encouraged" to upgrade to premium, so that they can skip the sh*t, which rises to the surface, when people really don't want to listen to it. Potentially offensive content, just in exactly the same way as those pester ad's is an integral part of Spotify's upgrade to premium business model.

If that is not the case, then surely, Spotify would have done something about it by now. I think it is a disgrace but there is zero encouragement to believe that Spotify bosses will ever change their minds about this issue.

Spotify regard their moral high ground as a virtue and their contempt for customer opinion as an art form

Well, I've emailed Spotify multiple times about providing an Explicit Button and/or Explicit Filter option on their mobile Apps for Family and/or Individual Premium Subscriptions to be told about their Censorship Polucy. I have advised Spotify it's NOT their job to tell me what explicit content I should or shouldn't listen to. I've been watching the threads of other subscribers that feel like I do.  But, it's obvious that Spotify doesn't care and therefore I will take the position to spend my subscription dollars at Apple Music who does offer an Explicit Filter on their service!  And out of principle, I will not EVER come back to Spotify! They have proven that after all the subscribers that have requested this feature, they have NO plans to make any changes and just keep posting occasional posts paying us lip service!! Bye Spotify!!

236 Comments on this, for years and no action. Here I am deciding if I should let my 11 year old have access to spotify. Im ready to pay for premium. Cash in hand people but you are losing me as I will not have my kid exposed to explicit, mysoginistic lyrics. I'm all in for 1st ammendent rights but you need to be able to filter for kids and personal tastes.   Give it to us or we shop elsewhere.   You are losing a big market folks.

When is this happening. If you are doing this, it would be great to set the preference in a secured environment so that in my family account, I can set up a kids setting to not be able to access explicit songs. Check out the way Netflix does it for Kids vs. Adults preferences. Please. my whole family loves using Spotify, but I'll have to stop if we can't secure music for children.

Roshni57

Yes yes yes to this please!!

Can it be that only an insignificant proportion of customers care if their children are exposed to filth? I wonder what business management plan spotify follow that allows such disrespect for consumer wishes

I would also LOVE this feature. I don't listen to Spotify very often because of this. I don't want the risk of a random F bomb around my kids.

I've been using google play music for a couple of weeks.  I liked spotify for the curated playlists but can't play it in the house since I've got three young kids.  Google has added curated playlists and they are actually really good.  Plus they have a profanity filter so I can listen at home.  I'll be cancelling my spotify membership soon.

@Fd2k - Google Music is offering a 2 month free trial period, which I just signed up for and will be cancelling my spotify once I've created all the same playlist for my kids MINUS the explicit music my 10 year old had placed in his.

Wondering if you can tell me if I have to set up the the filter in the Music section as well as the entire Google Play app?
