[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

Guys...we all know that it is not hard. It is simply a part of their
mission statement, Spotify will not censor music...period. I don't know how
many times I've heard this on this thread. Move on and pay for a different
music service. Maybe if enough people leave, they'll go out of business or
change their mission statement :).

Come on Spotify, surely this is a simple thing to do!? You already flag the song as explicit - just let us fliter out these songs!

To all of those that are saying that it's Spotify's mission statement not to censor songs - they wouldn't be censoring the songs, the user would simple have a choice not to show/listen to them.

This is actually why I won't upgrade to premium with Spotify

For every potential subscriber to the family plan that bothers to enlighten spotify as to the reason they will not be giving their money, there is in all probability several thousand others who just maintain a dignified silence and move on to another service. I am a happy subscriber to apple music but I have no dignity and just love this forum.

Totally agree - we need this function seen as we love playing random playlists but cant with the kids in the hosue.

This should included on the search for songs or album feature. Only allow edited, clean versions of a song to display whenever the explicit box or children or family box is checked or unchecked.  Nothing like DJing for a family gathering and search for a requested song that everyone is familiar with on the radio, but the one available on Spotify is literally loaded with profanity. That's bad for kids and family and look really bad for DJ Dad. Please give this high priority otherwise Spotify though a good music app will just got to go. Thank you for listening to your loyal listeners. DT

Spotify Community Search has 35 pages of requests regarding the word explicit. The requests are all for listener choice whether it is to be able to listen to explicit or not listen to explicit. Some requests reference explicit advertising and artwork.

Spotify states that there are 1,000 results that contain the word explicit. In the 35 pages I found that there are at least 2 pages out of the 35 plus occasional comments on the other 35 pages that do not pertain to explicit. In a rough count of comment requests plus the "likes" my close to accurate count is 13,342. Granted 13342 opinion requests is not many when there are 30 million paid subscribtions according to Bloomberg News. Of the 13342 requests 2/3 wish to block explicit and 1/3 want only explicit. The explicit / no explicit requests fall under:

  • Newcomers and Contribution
    Closed Ideas
    Music Chat
    Desktop
    Social Off Topic
    Live Ideas
    Accounts and Subscriptions
    Android
    Other
    iOS
    Web Player
    Content Questions
    Ongoing issues
    Playlist exchange and
    Idea Submissions

Most requests that do not have an up vote are marked as Closed Ideas. I would have counted those from the
beginning had I been aware of how many there were.

In 2014 a comment titled Explicit Ads stated: "The other day I was using the iPad app - listening to piano music - and an ad popped on about - I think - a record company. It played snippets of a few songs, and one of them had the F-word quite clearly."

One of the reasons we cannot get our choice is because record companies control 18% of Spotify. As the saying goes follow the money. "The record labels are: Sony BMG (5,8 percent), Universal Music (4,8 percent),
Warner Music (3,8 percent) and EMI (1,9 percent). Also Merlin holds a small stake." see link:

Behind the music: The real reason why the major labels love Spotify
No wonder the majors speak so highly of Spotify – they receive 18% of shares in the online streaming service.
It's justy a pity that artists won't get to see any of this.

For more current info see the following:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-07-20/will-a-spotify-ipo-live-up-to-its-8-billion-valua...

Ek’s company is great at what it does. Spotify dominates paid streaming, with more than 30 million customers, most paying $10 a month for a library of millions of songs. Last year sales almost doubled, to $2.2 billion. (Pandora, which has about 80 million users, reported sales of $1.2 billion.) So why the losses? Well, Spotify’s expenses start with commissions to the music industry, which last year totaled more than $1.8 billion, according to public filings. Record labels bank about 55 percent of Spotify sales, and publishers also get cuts. The largest checks go to the big three labels, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner
Music Group.

Will blocking their artists make the big three happy? Not so much imho........

Something is rotten in the state of Sweeden..........

Faced with a choice of Spotify or Google Music or Apple I have to consider the explicit lyrics issue. I have a 10 year old and a 6 year old and although I am sure they will be exposed to language at school there is no need to have to listen to it at home as well. If there is no filter in Spotify then that is a serious negative to me putting my business their way. I doubt that read these comments but they are missing a trick by not letting me choose if I want my family to listen to explicit lyrics or not. Poor show Spotify 😟

Why is this thread marked as "Solved"?

4 years, 6921 votes 243 pages of comments backing up the original request and still Spotify have done nothing about this.
