[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

It's been eight months. Could we please get an update?? I can't play Spotify when I'm with my family I have a 12:10 and 8 year old and so many of the good songs are inappropriate and aren't the radio versions why can't we listen to the radio versions?

5.5 years later and $potify still chooses not to implement a simple explicit language filter. I have been paying for premium for my family and still no such feature and it's to the point where we can't "discover" any new artists due to a majority of the songs being explicit. So disappointing that 8667 votes later we can't have a more family friendly option from Spotify without going to Apple Music. Their replies are friendly enough, at this point I have to conclude that the lack of feature implementation has nothing to do with cost or viability (it never did) but rather someones opinion that giving users a choice to filter lyrics is bad for artists, when in reality not providing the feature means they get no plays on my playlists and pretty soon no plays from me as a customer on Spotify.

Edit 9-15-2017: THANK YOU Spotify for implementing this feature on at least some of your device clients this past week! I was all disappointed that I forgot to cancel before my Family Premium Subscription renewed and so i went into settings after an app update completed and all there is now _FINALLY_ an "Allow Explicit Content" toggle switch under playback settings! This setting isn't showing up on the Mac client yet, so please enable it in all of your clients. For other users reading this, the version of the Spotify app on android that has this feature enabled is Version 8.4.18.743 armV7. I confirmed this on another android auto head unit (Eonon 7150A) as well after updating the app and restarting. The feature seems to work great for radio/discovery, but not on existing suggested playlists from other users. It would be nice if we could still explore other suggested playlists without showing the explicit songs on the lists. Regardless, just wanted to say thanks. Now, just don't take it away or you'll REALLY frustrate your users 😉

It has been 5 years since the suggestion was made.  Does premium have this feature?

Nope!

Spotify - you really do need to sort this.  I have thought about signing up but will not until I can be sure my family and myself can filter out explicit content.  Your strategy here seems to be a little dumb. My offering a filter you will appeal to more people!

we who have kids need this!

Any updates on the explicit button? You guys have a family plan so let's make the music appropriate for the family please

I'm actually shocked and disappointed that Spotify doesnt have this feature. You'll happily take my money with a family account, yet not provide the necessary safeguards for my children to listen to music.

Socially highly irresponsible.

Please add this feature. This is not about having kids or being offended by explicit lyrics. I need this feature so I can safely listen to spotify at work and not worrying about coworkers glancing at my screen to see I'm listening to a song with explicit content. This goes for the album art too! I'd rather just be able to switch explicit content off entirely while at work. Please implement this feature! Thank you!
