[All Platforms] Explicit Filter

Add a button that controls whether Explicit songs are played or not.  When it is off and you're listening to an album or playlist, the explicit songs are skipped. That way you can still listen to your favorite album or playlist when more impressionable members of the family (kids / parents) are around.

Hey folks!

It's great to hear music as the artist intended it to be heard, this means Spotify can sometimes include explicit content.

We recommend looking out for the EXPLICIT tag on any releases (E on the web player).
Note: Our explicit content tags are applied based on information we receive from rights-holders. This means we can’t guarantee all explicit content is marked as such.

It's also now possible to use the Explicit content filter on mobile and tablet devices (more devices coming soon!). Right now, the setting is only for the individual account and device. If you do apply the setting on your phone, it doesn't filter explicit content for the same account on the desktop app. It also doesn’t apply if you use Spotify Connect to play to another device. For more information on this, check out this support article.

We'll keep you up-to-date if there's anything else to share!

Thanks

When we have young kids around they do not need to hear the bad words. This is a much needed feature that not only spotify is lacking but the music community as a whole. You're losing more subsriptions but not having this than if you give more people the option to turn it off and on.

I just wish that Spotify would clearly state their position on this topic. Are they against a filter because they feel that all should have to hear explicit language?  Are they sympathetic to this issue?  If this request has been on-going on for five years now and nothing has been done, it doesn't look to promising to us premium members. However, luckily there is now a handful of places to take our business that are strikingly similar to Spotify. I know that as an Amazon Prime member/ Echo owner, I can get this same service for about $11/month cheaper.

I just want to know why the suits at Spotify won't even address the concerns that we have

Get on it Spotify! Add a block for explicit music. You have a great service but it's ridiculous that your consumers don't have a choice to keep trash off their playlist. Use your subscription premiums to create software to fix this FAST!

Listen to it around our 3 young kids as we all enjoy the range of music... until I have to dive for the skip button when those words appear.... you have the songs marked "explicit". Great. So just let those who have kids, or dont want to hear swearing every second, filter them out!!

Apart from this long overdue and needed feature... spotify rocks!!

I love Spotify's playlists and discover weekly. However, I need a way to control explicit lyrics when my kids are around. A simple switch to turn on/off explicit songs would be easiest. I'd prefer clean versions of the songs though. My kids LOVE hip hop and rap, but so many of the songs use inappropriate language and sometimes the topics/themes are just too racy for kids too.

Would be interesting if you could separate songs with bad words and songs with **bleep** and violence as 2 categories. My kids can hear a few bad words (I've taught them that music is a form of personal expression that some musicians want to use bad words to emphasize their points), but hearing raunchy **bleep** or violence is something I'd still want to avoid. I'd hate to remove the good music with a few bad words. But short-term - just give me a switch on/off explicit lyrics.

What is taking so long for a solution here? Pandora has had this ability for years!

Ironic, you offer a family plan but no conrols for explict music for those families. Get on it please!

Some really great solutions being posted but sadly I don't think anyone
from Spotify is listening. This forum strikes me as a place for us to vent
and feel more positive about the issues without a fix ever being put in
place. A kind of virtual pacifier. Otherwise, why wouldn't this be a thing
already. It's so logical and surely not too difficult to implement.
Especially on Spotify's budget.

Could be as simple as a "clean mode" similar to the idea of a "private session"
